He married (1) Alice Gill Vile993,994 1890, daughter of Richard Vile and Mary Collins. She was born 07 May 1872 in York, Ontario, Canada995, and died 02 Jan 1908 in Todmorden, East York, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada996. He married (2) Francis V. Chard997 26 Jun 1918 in 25 Convell AV, Todmorden, East York, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada998, daughter of Arthur Chard and Henrietta I.. She was born 26 Mar 1869 in Australia999, and died Dec 1929 in Ontario, Canada1000.
Notes for William Burgess: In 1898, William began the work that would thrust him into the spotlight of early Todmorden. He assumed the position of School Trustee - a position he retained until 1938 - when illness prompted his resignation. While he was working for the Board, he served a Chairman and Secretary - Treasurer. The latter responsibility was the one to which he was elected most frequently. Although he resigned from the position in January of 1932, he continued officially as Trustee until 1938. The other parts of William Burgess' life were equally as important to him. His first wife, Alice G. Vile, gave birth to three boys, William, Richard and Clarence. Their mother passed away in 1908, about eighteen years after her marriage to William. William's second wife, Francis Chard, was with him throughout most of his tenure as a Trustee, during his years in Todmorden, William Burgess was Superintendent of the Don Valley Brickworks, located just southwest of Todmorden Mills. His Victorian home at 30 North Logan Avenue has not suffered the inevitable fate of many older homes in the area. It still stands at 1148 Logan Avenue, just north of Cosburn Avenue, on the west side. It sits alone, in stark contrast to the two apartment buildings on either side of it. (As of 1994) William Burgess should be remembered as a man who contributed so much to education in the early years of his community. He was an integral part of the planning team that was responsible for the birth of William Burgess School. His name has been so aptly given to the former Torrens Avenue School by 1924, and it is currently displayed on the south wall of the west wing of his school and on the south wall of the Todmorden Legion. His forty years consecutive years of service as School Trustee (1989-1938) is an achievement unmated to this date.

I really wouldn't but I have no patience with people, but then again who cares? John William Latham born Nov. 5th 1880, only son of Bella (Cooper) Latham, she later married again, his name was Ashby. John Latham married Sarah Margaret Burgess eight child of John and Martha (Purchase) Burgess. Sarah Margaret's Mother died shortly after the birth of her ninth child, Mother and baby are buried together. John (Jack) Burgess were married in 1902 or 1903 and a daughter was born. In 1904 Verna, another daughter was born in 1906 named Audrey. Another daughter named Sarah was born in 1908. In 1909 Jack Latham was killed in a cave in at the Don Valley Brick Yard in Todmorden Ontario, just East of Toronto. He was 28 years age. His wife Sarah was left with 3 little girls, and she was 5 months pregnant with another child. Then baby was born April 13th 1910. There she was with 4 children and not a cent or anything to her name. Can you think of anything worse? What a hopeless' situation. The 3 little girls were shipped off to the Protestant orphans Home 344 Dovercourt Road, Toronto, and the baby boy stayed with his paternal Grandmother who by now had a very large family of her won. He was later taken to the home (at 2 years of age) John William. If a tragedy like this was to happen today, there would be a hue out cry but nobody really cared. Sarah's brother was head man at the Brickyard and if anyone could have helped her I guess it would have been him. He had a school named after him in Toronto, (it is till a school, The William Burgess School) I guess everyone had to look out for themselves. Poor dear Sarah. She went to work in the home of her uncle Johnnie Lennox, she worked for Uncle Johnnie his married daughter Lizzie, and her husband, and their children, also his crazy daughter Maggie (and I do mean crazy) at times she was quite violent (she had been kicked in the head by a horse at a young age. Sarah had to contend with all this and was paid $8 a mouth. In the meantime Sarah's children were in the home. It was alright, you got up in the morning by a bell ringing and did everything by bell, you always lined up in 2s and marched everywhere, no running, no dawdling, food was plain, lots of bread and watered milk, butter on bread on Sunday, stewed fruit, prunes apricots apples figs, no one was really hungry. Verna who was 6 years old when her Father was killed remembers him, he used to lie on the floor with her sitting and bouncing and he would sing. Shall there be any stars in my crown. She also remembers the day he was killed, his dog Fido a Dalmatian came home, shortly after the dog came home the Doctor drove up in his horse and buggy and came into the house to tell Sarah that Jack had been killed. She fell to the floor and seemed to be surrounded by a mist which seemed to come from her body. It was as if all the good came out of her and her unborn child, and in later years when Jack Jr. suffered so and had so many operations and had his leg amputated and died at 39, Verna always remembered the day her Mother collapsed with Jack inside of her and thought he had been doomed then, and she thought there was a curse on the Latham men.

I am fairly certain of who her parents were. In fact I have a fairly extensive Turl family tree. Firstly, I would like to know if I may attach your Purchase tree to my Turl family tree? Secondly, Do you know anything else about George and Elizabeth? I know that they had at least one child, a son named George Jr who went on to have children of his own. Thirdly, I am willing to share the Turl information that I have. I am anxious to connect all of my Turl trees together (if possible) and to also connect any families that married into the Turls. . such as the Purchase family. I have not posted the Turl family tree to any public web sites. . I do have it on MyFamily. com so that the members of that site can view the tree. We all share as much information about the Turl families as much as possible. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely. Brenda Turl PS You've done a great job with the information on your site!

Notes for Mary B. Goodyear: From: John Grace [mailto:jwgrace99 at yahoo. com] Sent: November 10, 2002 9:25 PM To: Sandi Sullivan Subject: Hoover-Goodyear genealogy Thought I'd let you know that I found Orrin and Mary (Goodyear) Hoover on the 1930 census. They are in Chelsea Michigan, USA, and he is listed as "Postmaster". I was surprised to find that Mary's mother, Jennie Goodyear, is living with them. Jennie's parents are both from England. She's listed as a widow. This is one of the few lines that I have that research in England might possibly lead somewhere. Hope you are doing well, John

Notes for Orrin T. Hoover: Portrait and Biographical Album of Washtenaw, Michigan, USA, Published 1891. Copy in Family Binder Orrin T. Hoover. The able and talented editor and proprietor of the sheet known as the Chelsea Standard took the position which he now holds in June, 1891, at which time he purchased the organ. It is a journal published in the interests of all classes of people in the vicinity, catering to the agricultural class which supports Chelsea so largely, as much as to the manufacturing and professional men of the town proper. Its local news are full and yet concise, and its editor disdains to drag into its columns the belittling scandal with which the pages of so many of our journals are made too spicy. Mr. Hover is a native of Grass Lake, Jackson, this State. He was born January 5, 1869, and is a son of John G. and Elizabeth A. (Tichenor) Hoover natives of New York and Michigan, USA respectively. Our subject's father was educated in the first-named State, and was brought West by his parents, who settled in Macomb County. They were John and Fanny (Gurnsey) Hover, natives of New York. Our subject's grandsire was here engaged in farming, and here also spent the remainder of his life, his decease taking place in 1886. John G. Hoover was reared a Farmer and remained at home until he was twenty-one years of age, when he engaged in the carpenter's work and became a builder and contractor. He now resides at Chelsea and was married in Grass Lake, Jackson County. He came to Chelsea in 1879, and still carries on this trade at this place. Our subject is one of tree children born to his parents, they being Orrin T., Nettie E. and Fanny H. He of whom we write received the rudiments of his education at Grass Lake and Finished at Chelsea in 1884. He her learned the printer's trade, and was thus engaged at this work for four years. Thence he went to Jackson and worked at his trade for one year, when he went to Saline, here he had charge of an office, and there remained for one year. At the expiration of that time he removed to Detroit and made that his home until 1891, when the opportunity was offered for the purchase of the paper of which he is now proprietor, and believing it to be good opening for an energetic and enterprising young man, he at once became its owner. The sheet was independent in politics and he aims to make its tone as high as possible. At the present time it has a circulation of six hundred and is meeting with as great a degree of success as so recently established an organ can expect. He is ambitious for his paper, and doubtless it will accomplish much good in the community wherein it has been established. Mr. Hoover was married March 18, 1891, to Miss Mary B. Goodyear, the daughter of Seymour and Jennie (Purchase) Goodyear, Natives of New York and Michigan, USA respectively, but now residents of Chelsea. He of whom we write is a Republican and belongs to the fresh young blood that has been infused into that party. He is an ardent believer in the future of his party and is willing to work for it accordingly. He is a member of the Typographical Union and seeks to keep abreast with the advancement of the times in whatever pertains to his profession as well as to the news of the day. Mr. Hoover is a young man who, in the parlance of the present day, might appropriately be called a "hustler," and one who is bound to become better known as the years pass by.

Notes for Royce Howard Sullivan: Thank you for coming today, I will try to get through this as best I can. My Dad was a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, Veteran, a 2 time hole-in-one scratch golfer, and many other things. I will start off with a story my Uncle Alf told me…. a few times in fact. Dad’s family lived on Coxwell Ave in Toronto and from what I can gather the house was always full. Dad had 3 brothers and 3 sisters spanning a 20 year age difference. One day my Nana sent my Uncle Alf to get my Dad…. Don’t know what he did, but it seemed to me that my Uncle Alf was always glad to get him. As my uncle was chasing him down Coxwell Ave to get his hands around his neck, my Dad slipped on the side walk and fell. When my Dad was scrambling to get to his feet he was also grabbing his comb out of his back pocket and started to run and comb his hair at the same time. I can just see my Uncle Alf’s face as my Dad ran away with good hair. My uncle couldn’t kill him that day as he couldn’t stop laughing. Dad’s hair saved the day. My Dad could run but he could not climb. When my brother Steve was about 10 years old he climbed a tree at the mini bike trails at Don Mills and the 401. Once Steve climbed out to a branch over the Don River he froze and couldn’t move. I think my brother Guy ran home and got my Dad. Dad ran over and climbed the tree to get Steve out but as he climbed to the same branch over the River Dad froze. We had to call the fire department to get both of them down. The next day I remember that my Dad wasn’t too happy on hearing the radio announcing every hour on the hour that the Manager of Park Manor Motors was “up and tree again” My Dad (Sully to everyone) was a very social man with many friends. He had a gang of them, Mike Harrington, Harold Shoniker, Dick Duff (Duffy) Dan O’Leary, Dan Morrissey, Glene Whitbread, Pete Tucker, Jerry and Waldo Vince, Mel Taylor and, The big Kahuna (don’t know if I ever knew what Kahuna’s real name was). And many more… the best way to describe them that I can think of is that they were the Rat Pack (the dirty dozen) with Golf Clubs instead of microphones. When my father went into business for himself with a partner Jimmy Izard, they started a used car dealership by the name of Compact Cars. Every year they would have a golf tournament at Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club where they were members. Every year my Dad would give away a used car for closest to the hole and every year I would sit on the ninth hole with a tape measure. And every year and every time I had to measure the closest to hole of one of his friends they would try to bribe me. Every one of them. Was it a test??? I remember they always had a 20 dollar bill in their hands as they walked up to see what the tape measure said. I always turned it down…. What they didn’t know was that the person who won the car every year always gave me a $50!!!!!! They were a funny bunch to say the least. My Dad had a few talents, one of which (I wish I had) was being an expert at crosswords puzzles, he was a Master. He always had a crossword on the go… One day in 1997, I was at work…. Dan was taking one of his few breaks and doing a crossword. Dan got stuck on a word and for the life of me I don’t know why Dan would ask me… I can’t spell… he knows that. But he did ask… I can’t remember what the word was, but it was a 9 letter word for something…. I laughed at the thought that he would ask me… but if there is one talent I do have… it is the ability of recognizing what talent various people have and knowing who to call … and even though my Dad was in the early stages of Alzheimer’s I called him…. I asked him the crossword puzzle question and he said. . . hmmmm I will think about it and call you back… 30 seconds later he called with the answer. I thanked him and went into Dan’s office. My Dad says that answer is “…” and he was right. I was so proud of him…. Remembering the little things in life get you through the big ones. Goodbye Dad.
