Unknown Purchase Records in Ontario

Descendants of Thomas Purchase

Generation No. 1

        1. Thomas1 Purchase1 was born in West Coker, Somerset, England1.

Notes for Thomas Purchase:

Henry Woodrow Purchase: His later correspondence with a Rector L. H. Bailey of St. Martin's Church West Coker Yeovil Somerset yielded the information that the parish records there made reference to the marriage of a Thomas Purchase, widower, to Ann Dalamont, widow, on December 29, 1802 and that a daughter Jane (step sister to John?) was baptized on September 4, 1803.

Child of Thomas Purchase is:

+      2                 i.    John2 Purchase, born about 1780 in West Coker, Somerset, England; died 1849 in Todmorden, East York, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada.

Generation No. 2

        2. John2 Purchase (Thomas1)2 was born about 1780 in West Coker, Somerset, England, and died 1849 in Todmorden, East York, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada. He married Ann Robson3,4, daughter of Thomas Robson. She was born about 1780 in England, and died Aft. 1824.

Notes for John Purchase:

1802, March 28, Mary, first child of John Purchase of Kirby Moorside, son of Thomas Purchase of Coker in Somerset, by mother descent Ann, his wife, daughter of Thomas Robson of Sunderland County Durham, born March 27, baptized Kirby Moorside. The above Mary buried April 7. " Hi Sandi, Another deep philosophical quandary. What a fertile mind that you have. This calls for another outrageous opinion from your humble servant in Saginaw. But first, congrats on finding the marriage of Ann Purchase and Ralph Stephenson in Beverley, Yorkshire, East Riding. That's where Henry Purchase and Elizabeth Hardy were married also. In the same year. Henry and Elizabeth eventually moved to Canada, but Ann and Ralph stayed in Beverley. Ann and Ralph had one daughter, Sarah Ann, who was born in Tickton, Yorkshire. Sarah married William Beck Arnott in Beverley, in early 1868, and their last daughter was Edith Harriet Arnott, born in 1880, who published the 1924 Purchase scroll. I think that the primary source for the information for the scroll was Sarah, and that upon her death in 1922, Edith finished the work that her mother began. Sarah's mother was Ann Purchase, and there are exact dates for her birth and death. Same thing for Sarah's father. Sarah would more likely know those dates than Edith. Ann Purchase, Sarah, and Edith all lived in Beverley most of their lives. How big is Beverley? Couldn't have been very large in the second half of the 19th century. I imagine they spent time together, and exchanged news about their families. Ann's husband, Ralph died early in life, and Ann would have had plenty of time on her hands. And Edith was still unmarried in 1924, so she had no husband or children to occupy her. Ann must have kept in touch with her siblings in North America, and helped Sarah keep up the family tree. Ann would have received news when her father died. Note that the scroll gives not only the year, 1849, but also the location. At Todmorden, near Toronto. Not Canada, or Upper Canada, or Ontario, or England. So I believe that John Purchase did indeed emigrate to Canada, and die there. As far as the emigration date, it is consistent with the dates that are attributable to his children. It could be off a year or two. There are a number of John Purchase's grandchildren that were born in North America in the second half of the 1830's: James White, born 1835 in Ontario. Hester White, born 1836. Rebecca Hockney, born 1838. Mary Jane Spafford, born 1838 in Michigan, USA. What is curiously missing are dates about Ann Robson. One explanation might be that Sarah did not start the family tree until after her children were all born, in 1881, and that Ann Purchase and Sarah just did not know or remember. Yeah, I think that John Purchase and Ann Robson left not only daughter Ann behind in England, but also sons John (born 1807) and Henry (born 1813). And maybe son William (born 1816), who said he emigrated in the spring of 1834, two years after his parents supposedly emigrated. The above is humbly submitted as my take on the Purchase saga. I'm right in the middle of remodeling my kitchen, utility room, and sun porch. New cabinets are in, as well as a new range and microwave. The counter top comes next week, and then plumbing hooked up to the sink and dishwasher. Then comes painting, wall papering, carpeting, and window coverings. Some days I don't turn on my computer or even check e-mail. Regards, Charlie.

Notes for Thomas Purchase:

Hi Sandi, Went to the Lansing library this week, in search of Thomas Purchase. I was hoping to find something about him in the time from when his two boys were born (1836 & 1838) until when he didn't appear on the 1850 census. The Detroit newspaper started publishing in 1837, but no copies are available until 1862. The Detroit city directory also started in 1837, and lists a "Thomas Purchase, Labourer, Julius al(ley), from Fourth st to Griswold st", in that year. The next directory was in 1845, but Thomas is not there, or in later years. The 1840 Michigan, USA census only lists the name of the head of the household. Thomas Purchase is listed as a male, 20 to 30 years old, with two males, aged under five, and one female, aged 20 to 30 years old, and one female under five years old. That would fit the Thomas from Edith Arnott's chart, to a tee. Some Birth Certificates are available there, but they didn't list his children. Neither did any Death Certificates that I looked at list any Purchases. Sometime along the day, I went into sensory overload, after looking through about 20 books. I went through a few books with Cemetery inscriptions without any luck. There are still more of those from areas just outside Detroit that I'll look at another time. That's about all I know for sure about Thomas, except that I believe his children lived relatives in Michigan, USA in 1850. I moved over to Washtenaw County (it abuts Wayne County), and is where William Robson Purchase and Maria Marsh lived. I found a few mini-biographies in the History of Washtenaw County. William R. has a birth date in Yorkshire, and says that he came to (North) America in 1834. Miriam Purchase is briefly mentioned on another page, giving her marriage date to O. A. Willsey. I'll send copies of these along to you. Take some of the info with a grain of salt: the bios list William R. and Miriam's mother as Amy, instead of Ann. But I would believe that both were born in Yorkshire. Regards, Charlie.

        9. Henry3 Purchase (John2, Thomas1)56 was born 1813 in Beverley, East Yorkshire, England, and died 20 Dec 1895 in Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada. He married Elizabeth Hardy56 18 Mar 1839 in Parish Church, United Parishes, St. Mary & St. Nicholas, Beverley, County of York, England57, daughter of James Hardy. She was born 01 Apr 1813 in England58, and died 19 Nov 1901 in Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada59.

Notes for Henry Purchase:

Can not find Death Certificate. Unable to read or write as per 1871 Census Hi, You are looking for facts, and I have some. And also some opinions. Henry Purchase is not listed in the 1840 Michigan, USA Federal census. Henry and Elizabeth first show up in the 1850 Michigan, USA census. It reads: Henry 38 England Elizabeth 36 do. Ann 9 do. Miriam 10 do. I thought her age was 16; it is actually 10. Elizabeth 4 do. Sarah 2 do. Opinion: All 6 of these people were born in England Henry Purchase and Elizabeth Hardy married in England in 1839. Their first child, Anna, was born there late that same year. Their next children, Miriam and Elizabeth, were born in Ontario. Then along comes Sarah, born in 1847. We had shown either England or Ontario as her birthplace. The 1851 census says Canada as her birth place. And somewhere I wrote that the 1871 and 1881 census also said that she was born in Ontario. The USA-Michigan 1850 census lists all the children as born in England. That is obviously wrong. Well, maybe not obvious, but I don't believe the 1850 census for birthplaces. The 1850 Michigan census says that George Purchase, their last child on that census, age 2, was also born in England. The 1851 Ontario census says that George Edward Purchase, age 2 at next birthday, was born in Canada. Both birthplaces are wrong. He was born in Detroit, as we learned from a later census. I just don't remember which one. Four more kids were born after that, all in Ontario - I believe. In the 1871 Ontario census, Henry and Elizabeth Purchase, daughter Ann Purchase Hunter, and daughter Sarah Purchase Hewitt are listed as born in England. Opinion: Daughters Ann, Elizabeth and Sarah were all born in England. Not sure about Miriam's birthplace. Now it gets sticky. In the 1881 Ontario census, Elizabeth Purchase Burgess, age 33, and Sarah Purchase Hewitt, age 32, are both listed as born in Ontario. Opinion: I don't believe it! At least Ann Purchase Hunter, age 43 (sic), still acknowledged her birthplace as England. I wonder about Elizabeth (nee Hardy) Purchase and the 1834 immigration date. Crank up your magnifier, and see if that might be 1854, instead. Henry Purchase is listed on the 1854 Michigan, USA state census, but no image is available. The 1900 U. S. census is the first year to ask people when they immigrated. There is no way to tell if they had lived in Canada before they moved to Michigan, USA from these censuses. Opinion: I don't think that Henry Purchase's immigration date to either the U. S. or Canada can be inferred from Edith Arnott's tree. Henry was 19 years old in 1832. I believe that he married Elizabeth Hardy in England and had four children there. Further, I believe that he (they) moved from England to Michigan, USA in about 1849 or 1850. No stop in Canada Some of this information will not agree with stuff I told you a year ago. I'm a year older, and smarter now. Another opinion. Edward Purchase should be listed as George Edward Purchase, born October, 1850, in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA. Now for you: there is price to pay for all this stuff. Your task is to find Miriam Speedie, her husband, and their offspring. You came across her name once before, but I don't remember what the circumstances were. Lots of luck. I put stuff in the mail to you today. I had to fill out a customs sheet. Warm regards, Charlie. (Note from Sandi. took me 2 days to find Speedie. damn I'm good)

Notes for Miriam Purchase:

Washtenaw County (it abuts Wayne County), and is where William Robson Purchase and Maria Marsh lived.
