Descendants of John Henry Laughlen

Generation No. 1

        1. John Henry2 Laughlen (Alexander V.1)1 was born 16 Sep 1783 in New Hackensack, Dutchess, New York, USA, and died 09 Sep 1867 in Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada. He married Elizabeth Stover2 Bef. 01 Jan 1806, daughter of Martinus Stover and Blandina Eighmy. She was born 23 Sep 1782 in Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada, and died 15 Apr 1867 in Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada.

Notes for John Henry Laughlen:

The complete works of Dr. E. Ross Laughlen's John Line is included in this history. John probably received little or no education. He worked with his father and on April 22, 1806 he was given the West half of Lot 17, second concession of Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada by his father. This farm consisted of one hundred acres. On October 24, 1836 John deeded this farm to Harriet R. Booth. John was married to Elizabeth Stover of Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada. It is well to notice that John's sister Hannah Laughlin married Martin Stover who was a brother of Elizabeth Stover. We do not know the date of John's marriage but it was prior to January 1, 1806 at which time his wife petitioned the Crown for land. Elizabeth Stover was unable to sign her name in 1806. John and his family moved from Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada to Sheffield Township. The time of this migration is not known. John received a deed to Lot 1, second concession of Sheffield, consisting of two hundred acres, on June 25, 1849 from the British Crown. Here John hewed out a home and lived the rest of his life. It is interesting to note that Robert McLaughlin, a descendant, is the owner of this homestead in 1939. On October 10, 1849 John deeded 150 acres of Lot 1, second concession of Sheffield to his son Martin Stover McLaughlin, John McLaughlin had a family Bible in which were recorded the names and birth dates of his parents and brothers and sisters. This Bible was in the possession of Mrs. John Franklin Thompson, Empey Hill, in Richmond, near Napanee, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada in 1936. His name was originally Laughlin or Laughlen but after leaving Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada he adopted the name McLaughlin and all his descendants are known as McLaughlin. John gave part of his farm for a Cemetery and it is now known as York Burying Ground. This McLaughlin family intermarried in the York families a great deal. John is buried in this York Burying Ground.

Notes for Richard York:

This needs research Name: Richard Lander Email: rlander(at)sympatico. ca This seems to be the right family but you have children for Elizabeth York. . Kingston Daily News Thursday, July 2, 1863 Murder in Sheffield A brutal murder was committed near village of Tamworth in the Township of Sheffield, on Sunday evening last, the victim was the daughter of Mr. Richard York. We have not been able to learn the full particulars of the case but from what we have heard it appears the young woman left her father's house on Sunday evening to visit her uncle who lives not far distant and was not seen alive again. A diligent search after the missing girl resulted the next morning in finding her dead body not far from her father's house covered in brush. Her head was badly crushed and it was discovered that the unfortunate girl's person had been violated. A young man named Fralick has been committed on a coroner's warrant charging him with the murder and he was lodged in the country jail Wednesday morning. Friday, July 3, 1863 Cruel Murder Young man dashes the brains out of his Lover Neighbourhood horrified by the Beastly Details From the Kingston Daily News One of the the most cold blooded and atrocious murders that has ever been our painful duty to record took place in the 11th concession of the township of Richmond on Sunday evening last. The perpetrator of the crime is about 20 years of age and a Canadian by birth, of medium height and of low mental calibre. His name is Zachariah Fralick, a son of Mr. Peter Fralick, a near neighbour of the father of the murdered girl. It appears that this young man or brute, as the result proved him to be, had been for some time paying his addresses to this Elizabeth York, which he alleges were well received at first, accompanied by promises of marriage but latterly for some reason she appears to have turned her attention to another lover. Judging from remarks which fell from his own lips, this feeling of jealously and the goading from his associates' taunts exasperated him to revenge Knowing that Miss York was on a visit to her uncle's, who lived about fifty rods from his father's res! idence, he availed himself of that opportunity to carry out his merciless design. He appears to have waited on the roadside until she returning home, between nine and ten o'clock at night, and accosting her, put his arms around her person in an endearing manner, when she slapped him in the face with the back of her hand. The prisoner said this made him angry and he slapped her with his fist, then he picked up a large stone and beat her with it, when he stunned her and finally threw her over the fence to prevent the hogs from devouring her. He then went home and told no one of the occurrence when he was arresting on suspicion the following day, when his clothes were still besmeared with her blood. When asked by this writer if he she made any demonstrations of defence, she said she did not but screamed "Oh Mercy" and staggered back. The unfortunate girl was not missed until the following day, her parents supposing she was in bed. But she was discovered by a dog whose barking attracted attention and the parents and neighbours, and following the faithful dog were led to the very spot where the murdered girl lay. When they found her which was after the morning, which was well advanced, she was still breathing but died shortly after. Through the kindness of the gaoler, Mr. R. Corbett, we were allowed to converse with the prisoner and have this own statement from his lips. The prisoner said he would not have committed the deed, had not a young man by the name of John Brandon, from Lime Lake, not have told him "If he did not kill her, he would make away with him. " The prisoner evinced but little feeling in the matter but said he was sorry for what he had done and that he did not know what would be done with him for his crime. Miss York was 19 years of age and so far known bore a good character. When accused of the crime, the prisoner confessed the whole at once and made no effort to get away. He was this morning lodged in gaol. He freely communicates the particulars of this horrible affair when asked in reference to any of the details. Friday, December 11, 1863 A Ghastly Joke This morning the excited crowd that congregated in the vicinity of the gaol to witness the execution were startled by the appearance upon the trap by an individual who accepted to be the criminal Fralick. After making an obeisance to the multitude, a second person slipped the bolt and the perpetrator of the joke fell threw. The occurrence created an intense excitement and a large proportion of the spectators were included to believe that the execution has actually occurred. Kingston American. Sandi, I have this Elizabeth in my files as daughter of Harmon York of Sheffield- in Kingston Branch OGS transcription for Ingle-McLaughlin cem. he is listed as Herman York. I have no idea where the "Richard" comes from? Harmon died Aug. 26, 1911 ( at ) Richmond. Second (?) wife was Elizabeth Wheeler- have no info on her but born about 1840. I would like to know who his first wife was, the mother of Elizabeth who was murdered. Was it Charlotte Barrager who is listed in that same cem. transcription? It reads: Charlotte Barrager 1823-1845. If she was Elizabeth's mother, did she die having her? notesfornora( at )telus. net Nora in Alberta, Canada

Notes for Samuel McCumber:

The family sources Iva McCumber Knoll and Orville McComber, great great grandson of Samuel, state that Samuel "left" because he "had a fight with Royal". (It isn't known whether this meant his brother Royal, or his father). Evidently Samuel abandoned his wife and three children, either for the U. S. or Western Canada. Although this happened several generations back, the McCumber descendants still remember and wonder what happened to him, if he was unable to return to his family, or if he chose not to return. We have always known in my McCumber family that "Samuel had a fight with Royal and disappeared. " Years later I met a GGS of Samuel and Hannah, the late Orville McCumber of Raymondville, New York, USA who repeated the story to me. He was so distressed about the disappearance I could not understand it. Further, if 2 brothers had a disagreement, what could be so serious that one would leave his wife and 3 children and disappear? My 2GGF Royal-2 died an untimely death at 46, probably Richmond, in 1856. He is buried in the Sexsmith Cemetery at Selby. Does anyone else know anything about this fight? Was it a "Go to hell brother. " fight or something more lethal? Samuel disappeared before the 1861 Sheffield census but Hannah was still there. Nearby were Daniel McCumber and wife Hannah Asselstine. I have considered that Daniel might have been another brother, but descendants disagree. If Orville and I know about this fight and disappearance 140 years later then surely someone else knows about it. What happened between these two brothers? Many thanks. email: mohoso(at)webtv. net

Notes for William Jacob York:

Around 1895, he left for the Yukon with a surveying party and was never heard from again. Enquiries at the Comptroller's office of the Yukon Territory at Dawson, Yukon Territory, elicited the following data: "On one of the old files of this office there are one or two papers or memoranda relating to a William York who died in this District some time prior to the 27th of December, 1899. He seems to have been the holder of an interest in a mining claim on Henderson Creek, a tributary of the Yukon River, and also one on Rosebud Creek, a tributary of the Stewart River. Some mining was done on these creeks in the early days, but they have not been active for many years. Dr. E. Ross Laughlin was unable to find any record of the estate in the office of the Public Administrator beyond the index of Mr. York's name in the general file index. This index however, did not give the number of a file, and he was unable to find any other material relating to the estate in this office. " This, possibly was William York, son or Marenas Gilbert York.
