Descendants of Matthew de Hyde

Generation No. 1

        1. Matthew1 de Hyde1 was born about 1167 in Hyde, Chester, England, and died Aft. 11952. He married Female3 about 1192 in Hyde, Chester, England. She was born about 1171 in Hyde, Chester, England.

Notes for Matthew de Hyde:

The Hyde's of Denton The township of Hyde in modern Tameside bears local name of one of its oldest and most distinguished families. It began with one Matthew de Hyde (or Mathaeus de Hide) whose son Robert acquired the title Robert de Norbury from King Edward II, as well as Lordship of the Manors of Hyde and Newton in Chester, Shalcross in Derbyshire and of Halghton in Lancashire. The family is related by ancestry to the Hyde's of Wiltshire at Tisbury and West Hatch and to Edward Hyde, the Earl of Clarendon. The Hyde's (or Hides) held estates at one time comprised of one hundred and ninety one acres. Their county seat was at Hyde Hall, a sixteenth century building, much altered in subsequent centuries by brick face work. Probably the most famous member of the Hyde family was Anne, wife to King James II and mother of Queen Anne. Omerod's History of Cheshire quotes 'that about the time of King John, one moiety of the township of HYDE was vested in a family which bore the local name and was then represented by Matthew de Hyde'. This Matthew had a son, Sir Robert Hyde, knt. Lord of the manors of Hyde and Newton in Cheshire; of Shalcross in Derbyshire; and of Halghton in the county of Lancashire, who married the cousin and heiress of Thomas de Norbury, by whom he acquired the lordship of Norbury, Cheshire. Descended from these Hyde's are those in Wiltshire at Tisbury and West Hatch and also Edward Hyde; Earl of Clarendon.

Notes for Female:

The book "Kin of Mellcine Thurman Smith" mentions the following on the early Hyde families: Coat of Arms for Hyde: Azure, a chevron between three lozenges or. Crest: An eagle, wings endorsed sable, beaked and membered or. (This crest is given for Hyde in Welles and Allied Families, p. 22, published 1927 by the Am. Hist. Society, Inc., and also in the Harleian Soc. Pub., Visitation of Cheshire, Vol. 18, p. 131. ) In Ormerod's History of Cheshire, Vol. 3, p. 394, the following is given: Crest: On a wreath a crow, with wings elevated, proper. This is illustrated not colored in Ormerod. The coat and crest as given in the Welles Family Hist. is colored. The family name of Hyde is derived from one of the six Hyde parishes of England, and these originally derived their names from location "at the hide," a plot of about 120 acres of land. John de la Hyde is recorded in the Hundred Rolls of Oxfordshire, 1273 A. D., and Adam Atte Hyde in the writs of Parliament, 1300 A. D. There are several titled families of the name in England, but the highest are now extinct. The Hyde's of Norbury and Hyde, County Chester, whose arms are described above, descended from Sir Robert Hyde, living in the reign of Henry III (1216-1272). Hyde Hall (generally called Hyde Mill, from an ancient mill near the mansion) is the residence of the manorial proprietor, and was new-cased with brick by the late possessor, in his father's lifetime. A considerable portion of the former fabric is preserved in the interior; and from the arms of Hyde, with several quarterings (Impaling Brooke) appearing in the carved wainscoting of one of the apartments, it is probable that the hall was rebuilt about the time of the Restoration. (When Charles II came to the throne, 1662, following Cromwell. E. E. W. ) It is situated on low ground, near the Thames River, on the verge of the, and of late years the increase of collieries and manufactories in the neighborhood has added more materially to the value of the land than to the picturesque appearance or actual comfort of the surrounding district. A court is held regularly for the Manor. The ancestry for the Hyde's of Norbury is compiled from the book "Kin Of Mellcene Thurman Smith" and is taken from "Omerod's History of Cheshire Vol. 3, pp. 393-395" and "Burkes Landed Gentry Vol. 3 p. 2759-2760". The author states that "This lineage does not agree with that given for Hyde's of Norbury in Ormerod's Hist. of Cheshire, Vol. 3, pp. 393-5, but the differences are not great and can be worked out. The last five generations are the same. " The following is the Burkes ancestry of the Hyde family.

Children of Matthew de Hyde and Female are:

+      2                 i.    Sir Robert2 de Hyde, born about 1193 in Hyde, Chester, England; died 1225.

Notes for Sir Robert de Hyde:

He was Lord of the Manor of Hyde and Newton in Chester, Shallcross and Ferneley in Derbyshire, about 1209-1228, and Halghton and Denton in Lancashire about 1225, in which county he had also nine oxgangs of land in Heiton. He was living in the time of Henry III.

Notes for Agnes de Herdislee:

Agnes de Herdislee, cousin and heiress of Thomas de Norbury, who quitclaimed to Robert Hyde his right in Norbury, Newton and half Hyde, and thus Norbury came to the Hyde's by this marriage. "

Children of Robert de Hyde and Agnes de Herdislee are:

+      4                 i.    Robert3 Hyde, born about 1219 in Hyde, Chester, England; died about 1290.

5                ii.    Alan Hyde4, born about 1221 in Hyde, Chester, England

6               iii.    Richard Hyde4, born about 1223 in Hyde, Chester, England

7               iv.    Hugh Hyde4, born about 1225 in Hyde, Chester, England; died Aft. 1280.

Generation No. 3

        4. Robert3 Hyde (Robert2 de Hyde, Matthew1)5 was born about 1219 in Hyde, Chester, England, and died about 1290. He married (1) Alice Hyde. He married 2nd Margery Stokeport abt 1244, daughter of Sir Robert Stokeport, Knight, and had by her Alexander, ancestor of the Hyde's of Denton, an adjacent township on the Lancashire bank of the Thames, which he had by gift from his father. "

She was born about 1249 in Bagulegh, Lancashire, England, and died Aft. 1358.

Notes for John Hyde:

"His heirs used the Baggiley coat of arms, inverting the colors and adding a chevron. He married 1st Margaret Davenport, daughter of Sir John Davenport, by whom he had John and Roger, who are mentioned in the settlements of the Manor of Norbury and Half of Hyde, who appear to have died without issue. (This is where the lineage as given in Ormerod disagrees with Burke, who makes this son John the next in the line instead of William. Ormerod says that this pedigree appears to be the first draft of a pedigree from deeds, and the compiler seems to have gotten into considerable confusion in consequence of this John having a son John. This lineage will continue from Ormerod and following will be a copy of lineage as given by Burke in the 1939 edition of the Landed Gentry. E. E. W. ) John Hyde married 2nd Ellen Baggiley, daughter of Sir William Baggiley, Knight, Lord of Baggiley and sister and co-heiress of her brother John, who d. s. p. in 1356. The Bagilley arms were: Or three lozenges azure. The wife of John Hyde is sometimes erroneously called Isabel, which was the name of her sister, who married Sir John Legh, her own name being probably Ellen, as that is the name given to her sister by mistake. On this Sir John Hyde was settled by Sir William Baggiley, in the 13th of Edward II, 1320, "the manor of Hyde" meaning most probably the other moiety of Hyde, which afterwards passed to the other sister, but he nevertheless obtained several estates by this marriage, and his sons John and Roger, by his 1st wife, are mentioned in the settlements of these estates 12th of Edward II and 31st of Edward III. By Ellen Baggiley he had William, mentioned in the last settlement (but not as the son of Margaret), Ralph, John, Thomas and Robert who married Elizabeth Staveley. (This Robert is given in the direct line in Burke. E. E. W. ) Sir John Hyde served under the Black Prince 30th of Edward III, 1356. "

+      12               i.    John5 de Hyde, born about 1271 in Norbury, Chester, England; died Aft. 1364.

Notes for William Hyde:

It has been reported that he was born out of wedlock. William Hyde was one of the original proprietors of Norwich, New London, Connecticut, USA, in 1660, and a man of considerable importance among the settlers frequently elected as a townsman, or selectman. He died at Norwich, January 6, 1681. No information has been obtained as to his first wife. He had two children by her, Samuel Hyde, born about 1637, married Jane Lee, and Hester Hyde, who married John Post. Title: "Florence Abell Stock and her Ancestry", by H. Thompson Stock, 1986. Page: page 31, 44 Text: William Hyde was an important man in Norwich. He had been an original proprietor of Hartford, Connecticut, USA, a proprietor at Saybrook, Connecticut, USA, and then an original proprietor of Norwich. He, his son, Samuel, and his son-in-law, John Post, and thirty two other Saybrook men and their families had found and had settled in Norwich, New London, Connecticut, USA in 1660. William Hyde had probably come to Newe Towne (Cambridge) in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1633 with the Reverend Thomas Hooker's group. In 1636, he and his family were among those who walked to found Hartford, Connecticut, USA. His name is also on the monument in Hartford which honors that city's pioneers. Here he became a proprietor in 1639. Later, he too went to Saybrook, where he acquired land. In 1660, he, his son, Samuel and his son-in-law, John Post, and thirty two other Saybrook men and their families founded Norwich, New London, Connecticut, USA. They were the original proprietors. In addition to owning their own home lots, they had an interest in the undivided parts of the tract of land that the group had purchased. He was born in England. The name of his first wife also is not known. By her he had these known children; Hester/Esther; married John Post Samuel, born about 1637 in Hartford. William Hyde died at Norwich, 6 January 1682. Joanna, his second wife, the widow of Robert Abell, died sometime after 1682. She was buried at Norwich, New London, Connecticut, USA. The names of William Hyde/Hide and his son Samuel are among those inscribed on a monument in the "Old Burying Ground" in Norwich, erected in 1871 in honor of the first settlers. A larger monument was erected in 1959 on the Town Green. Title: Hyde Genealogy; From William Hyde, of Norwich, by Reuben H. Walworth, LL. D., 1864 Page: page 1-3 Text: William Hyde, the first, of Norwich, is not certainly known to have been connected with any of the Hyde families who came to this country from England. His name first appears at Hartford, Connecticut, USA, in 1636. And his name is on the monument in the old Cemetery at that place as one of the original settlers; and he had lands assigned to him there. The time of his removal to Saybrook, is not ascertained, but he owned lands in Hartford as late as 1639. He probably went to Saybrook soon after that and his daughter was married there early in 1652. No information has been obtained as to the name of his wife, or when or where she died. On his removal to Norwich he sold his house and home-lot to Francis BUSHNELL, and other property to Robert LAY. 3 He died Jan. 6, 1681-82. His age is not known, but he was styled "old Goodman HIDE" in 1679. [3 The sales are registered at Saybrook, with the following receipt: "I William HIDE of Mohegan do acknowledge to have received of Robert LAY of Six Mile Island the full and just sum of forty pounds which was the first payment specified in the agreement made 25th day of January 1659 for all the lands I had at Potapaugue. The original settlers in Norwich were of English origin. While some had been born in the New World, many had come from England. English settlement in Connecticut, USA had begun in the 1630s along the Connecticut, USA River, coming primarily from Massachusetts Bay Colony. Others came from Plymouth Colony or directly from England. In May 1659, settlers from Saybrook, Connecticut, USA petitioned the Connecticut, USA General Court for permission to start a settlement at Mohegan. Petition was granted quickly and in June, Mohegan leaders transferred the land to them. A small party constructed the first house and wintered over. In 1660, settlement began in earnest. The leaders of this group were Major John Mason and Rev. James Fitch. Due to initially poor record keeping, a listing of original proprietors had to be constructed some years later in order for the Colony to comply with English law. Frances M. Caulkins in her History of Norwich provides the best listing available. These settlers were: Rev. James Fitch, Major John Mason, Christopher Huntington, Simon Huntington, Thomas Adgate, William Hyde, Robert Allyn, William Backus, William Backus., Jr., John Baldwin, John Birchard, Thomas Bliss, Morgan Bowers, Hugh Calkins, John Calkins, Richard Edgerton, Francis Griswold, Samuel Hyde, Thomas Leffingell, John Olmstead, John Pease, John Post, Thomas Post, John Reynolds, Jonathan Royce, Nehemiah Smith, Thomas Tracy, Robert Wade, Thomas Bingham, John Bradford, John Gager, Stephen Gifford, Richard Hendy, Thomas Howard, Thomas Waterman, John Tracy, Josiah Reed, Richard Wallis The Hyde's were a noted family in England. Sir Nicholas Hyde was chief justice of the Kings Bench, and Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon, was lordchancellor at the restoration, and was grand father to two queens in the English succession, Mary, the second, and Anne. The Hyde ancestry in America is equally strong in great men. Such was Hon. Matthew Griswold, chief justice and governor of Connecticut, USA; such the Hon. John M. Niles,United States senator and postmaster general in Van Buren's administration, such was the Rev. Edward Duran Griffin, president of Williams College; such the Hon. William Woodbridge, United States senator and governor of Michigan, USA. " See Hyde genealogy: descendants in the female and male lines, from William Hyde of Norwich : 2 vols, 1864. Walworth, Reuben H. Some sources have said that William was a cousin (unspecified degree) of Ann Hyde, the wife of James II of England while he was Duke of York. Ann was the mother of Queens Ann and Mary of England. He was chosen surveyor of Highway s in Hartford, 1641. He moved to Saybrook, then to Norwich in about 1660. " "Opposite Post and Birchard, on the northeast side of the street, were the allotments of William Hyde and his son Samuel, extending back into the commons. The Hyde house stood a few rods back from the town street, upon the "highway into the woods," as the lane was then called, near the present residence of Henry B. Tracy. The Father and son probably formed but one family. The Mansfield house, built by one of the later Hyde's, on a part of the old home lot, has descended to the present owner by inheritance on the maternal side from the Hyde's, and has never been conveyed out the family. " (Frances M. Caulkins in her History of Norwich) He was a widower & resident in the household of his daughter Hester and her husband John Post at the time of his death.

Notes for Hester Hyde:

It was reported that she may of been was born in England in Hyde Genealogy, or the Descendants in the Female as well as the Male Lines from William Hyde of Norwich. What renders it almost certain that three of the seven daughters of Hester Hyde and John Post must have died previously to 18 Jan 1686, and probably unmarried, is that by a deed of that date, upon the Windham records, it appears that William Hyde willed to the daughters of his only daughter, Hester Post, certain lands in Windham. That a controversy arose between the eldest son of her brother and the devisees, in relation to the validity of this will: and that a compromise took place between him and the three sons-in-laws of Hester Hyde and John Post; Caleb Abell, John Hough and Nathaniel Rudd. And by their deed the latter three conveyed, to the said oldest son of Samuel Hyde the first, one-half of the lands in dispute, in compromise of his claim. And no mention is made of any other granddaughters of the testator, as being in existence, to make any claim to the lands under the will devising the same to the daughters of the testator's daughter, Hester Post. Notes for John Post:

See Hugh Calkins for The Patent of the Town of Norwich, A. D. 1685 which John Post is mentioned. John Post bought lands in Saybrook with his father Stephen. In 1649 he was named by the Hartford Court to assist his father in rebuilding Saybrook Fort. In the year 1652, just before his marriage, he bought two acres on which to build a house close to Saybrook Fort. John was present at Town Meetings in the year 1655. In 1663 he was declared eligible for the Freeman's Oath. They settled at Saybrook, where their four eldest children were born. They removed to Norwich in 1660. There home lot was on the opposite side of the street from that of his father-in-law, William Hyde, and was, in 1858, in the possession of two of there descendants, the widow, Lucretia Carew, and her daughter, the widow of Roswell Morgan, Esq. Notes for Sr. Samuel Hyde:

Samuel Hyde and his wife came to Norwich in 1660. Their eldest daughter Elizabeth, born in August of that year, was the first white child born in Norwich. He was a Farmer and had lands assigned to him at Norwich West Farms where he died in 1677?, at the age of 40 years. And John Birchard became the guardian of his children, who were all minors at that time. The date of his wife's death is not ascertained. This was taken from Hyde Genealogy, or the Descendants in the Female as well as the Male Lines from William Hyde of Norwich and there is some conflicts on this information. Norwich was settled in 1660. The 35 original proprietors of that town were William Hyde, and his son, Samuel Hyde, and his son-in-law, John Pos The five sons of Samuel, Sr., had forty children, of whom twenty-five were sons and reared families. This accounts for the rapidity with which the name spread through the county. In 1779, there were upwards of twenty families of Hyde's, numbering over one hundred and fifty members, in the town plot and western part of Norwich, and notwithstanding the removals to other parts of the country, the census in 1791 records thirteen families of the name in Franklin and eight others in Norwich. The Hyde's have been pioneers in every generation. As soon as civilization overtook them, some would "move on," until they were distributed from Maine to California, and from Florida to Puget Sound. No doubt some have made their way to Alaska, not that they avoid civilization, for wherever they settle there is soon seen a church and a school. The pioneer spirit is as much an inheritance as a love of travel. It is the spirit of progress working out in different ways.
