Notes for Kezia Benson: Married at the age of 17 - unusual for the time. She was the daughter of a Baptist Minister and was not baptized in a church but was accepted into the faith after her birth as was the custom of their faith. You will noticed that the name of Benson keeps cropping up as a second given name with a lot of the children, it was obviously important, probably because Kezia's brothers were jewellers and silversmiths, and having 3 shops and manufactories in the better parts of London, and consequently quite wealthy. Kezia had travelled from her home in London as a child with her family to Reading, England because her father took up a post as a Minister there, she as you see, met and married Thomas, and some years later returned to the area of London which she knew, with younger members of her own family. In 1871 Census her name is indexed wrong, they have it as Vivia Harman. Marriage Notes for Thomas Harman and Kezia Benson: Reading, a borough and market town, having separate jurisdiction, locally in the hundred of Reading, county of Berks, 26 miles south southeast of Abingdon, and 39 southwest of London, on the road to Bath, lies less than 4 mi. from Beenham (See Also Parishes within 10 miles of Beenham). "In the beginning of the reign of Charles I., the courts of Chancery, King's Bench, and Common Pleas, with the court of Exchequer, and the courts of Wards and Liveries, were held at Reading, in Michaelmas term, in the year 1625, and again in 1635, in consequence of the prevalence of the plague, which was then raging in the metropolis, and a commission under the great seal, for putting in force the laws against the Popish recusants, was read in the courts here. At the commencement of the parliamentary war in this reign, the town was garrisoned for the parliament, but was abandoned by the governor on the approach of the royal forces in 1642; after which it was held by the king's troops, till taken for the parliament by the Earl of Essex, in the following year, after a siege of eight days. After the battle of Newbury, Essex marched to Reading, where he remained for two days; on his departure, it was again garrisoned for the king, who, on his visit in 1644, ordered the military works which had been erected, to be demolished: there are still many extensive remains of the outworks in the Forbury. The inhabitants suffered severely from the contributions levied by both parties, who had alternate possession of the town. In 1688, some Irish and Scottish troops belonging to the army of James II. were posted at Reading, from which they fled on the approach of the Dutch troops under the Prince of Orange; but returning soon after, a skirmish took place in the town, in which the only officer in the prince's army who lost his life in the expedition, was killed: the anniversary of this battle, which was called "Reading Fight," was annually commemorated till about the year 1788, when it was discontinued. The town comprises the parishes of St. Giles, St. Lawrence, and St. Mary, in the archdeaconry of Berks, and diocese of Salisbury. The living of St. Giles' is a vicarage. in the patronage of the Crown. The living of St. Lawrence's is a vicarage. in the patronage of the President and Fellows of St. John's College, Oxford. : The living of St. Mary's is a vicarage. in the patronage of the Crown. " (Lewis, 1830)

I have a Kezia Benson mother to Thomas Benson Harman. My records suggest Thomas was born on 11 June 1837. Thomas married Lucy Anne (surname?) born 8/8/47. I think Kezia is on the 1881 UK Census living at 82 James Street, Lambeth, Surrey, although she's been transcribed as Freyia Harman, widow, aged 69 born Christchurch, Surrey, England. I don't have any other children for her but her grandchildren by Thomas were Lucy Adelaide, William Benson, Kezia Benson, Kezia Benson, Joseph Charles, Amos, Edward and Maria Emma. Maria Emma was my great grandmother. Please let me know if you have any further information or if anything above is of interest. Best wishes Melanie Gray From: Carl Gray [mailto:cgray(at)gfbredon. freeserve. co. uk] Sent: Wednesday, March 24, 2004 7:35 AM To: Sandi(at)SandiSullivan. com Subject: RE: Keziah Benson Hi Sandi, Thanks for your mail and attachments. My connection is with Maria Emma Harman b 27 May 1872, who married Henry Haywood. Do you have any Haywood's on your tree? I haven't had a chance to input the data on my tree into a program yet, but when I have done this I could send you a GED COM file if you would find that of interest. And it would be great to receive one if you are able to email yours to me, and if it's not too large! It seems Keziah was a problematic name in the census returns, but I thought it was not uncommon for the period. Best wishes Melanie
