Notes for James Sullivan: Bad news - nothing there for a "James Sullivan, Suffolk Regiment. Served 1897-1904/1905. Boer War (South African War) participant. Born Sep 25, 1877 at Middlesex, England. Enlisted personnel. " Maybe it was on the misfiled microfilm. Will send another request for that WO file tonight. Quick bit on the Suffolk Regiment: I don't believe the Suffolk had a 7th Battalion during the South African War. From what I can find (in my quick reading of the web), the Regiment had two regular (professional) Battalions - the 1st and the 2nd. The 2nd spend the South African War in India and wasn't involved. The 1st arrived in January (about 3 months after the war had begun). All but two members of the 1st Battalion sailed with the Regiment (1 was in prison for a debt and joined later, the other for unspecified reasons). The Suffolk Regiment also had four Volunteer Battalions (non-professional soldiers). All four of those Battalions ended up fighting in the conflict (the 4th didn't actually see combat, but served as concentration/prisoner guards). Herewith today's research results. There are 4 James Sullivans listed for Sep 1879 born in London - 1 in Marylebone, 1 in the Strand, 1 in Whitechapel and 1 St George in the East; and a further 2 born in Sep 1875. I could run a check on the 1901, hopefully picking him up as a soldier stationed somewhere in England or Wales. I tried to match up a reference in the 1881 census by his father, who we know was also called James; but as luck would have it all James Sullivans of about this age had fathers called James. The only other way is to order all 6! The search for records at the PRO was less fruitful; I checked the relevant discharge papers in WO97/6019, but although there were many James Sullivans, none matched; it is possible that the details provided on the Canadian papers were not correct, or that the discharge material was forwarded to the Canadian forces on re-enlistment. There are some other checks I could run, and will do so next week (if you are happy with this). I'll run the 1901 search before asking you for a decision about the certificates Dear Sandi Herewith some further data - possible matches within the St Olave / St Saviour / Lambeth regions, 1875-1979 James - Sep 1875; Jun 1876; Sep 1876; Dec 1876 (all St Olave); Jun 1879 (St Saviour) Less possible are the following: James Thomas - Jun 1875 (St Olave) James Joseph - Dec 1875 (St Olave) James John - Mar 1877 (Lambeth) It could be any one of these, but the most likely match would be Sep 1875. I'll double check 1881 again. If it's ok with you, I'll order this certificate; fingers crossed it's the right one. I'll run once last 1881 scan but none of the potential details seem to match. I can only assume he was born further out, and then the family moved to the area later. In which case, assuming London is the focus, there is one further possible for Sep 1875 (Croydon) and 4 possibles for Sep 1879. Best wishes Sarah Dear Sandi, Finally - the 1901 is back for a limited trial period at the PRO, and I had a search for James Sullivan. As expected there were no matching details for him (army soldiers were not listed). However, I did find Annie's family and obtained an address - 8 Karl Place, China Walk, Lambeth; I then used this to try to work out where James Sullivan snr might be living, if (as you say) they were within walking distance. As we have no age with which to work, other than the fact that James snr would have been old enough to father a child in either 1875 or 1879 (ie a minimum age of 43), I tried a search for all James Sullivans between the age of 35-60. I ruled out a James Sullivan aged 39, even though he lived in 95 Smith Street, Lambeth; and was left with only 1 other candidate, James Sullivan, 49, general labourer, 16 Tregenna Street, Lambeth; however, his wife Sophia was 38, and they had 4 young children, Albert 12, William 9, James R 4, John T 1month. There is the chance that this is a second marriage (perhaps a reason that James jnr went into the army?), or that Sophia was a child bride (!) - but neither seems totally likely. I could widen the search a little, but I need to locate (a) where Karl Place is, (b) a geographical area NOT in Lambeth but still close enough for Annie to walk to read letters to James's family. I can do this at the London Metropolitan Archives of Surrey History Centre, both of which are on my list of places to visit. Best wishes Sarah I checked the address - 15 Brunswick Street, Southwark - but could find no match (the familys were Einchcombe, Rosewell and Moore). Similarly I ran a search for a James Sullivan living in Southwark aged 40-60, but there were no matches. Given that James snr is listed as deceased on the marriage certificate, I can only imagine that he had perhaps died by 1901 (does this fit with family legend?) If so, I could at least identify possible matches from 1901 back (or even from the date of the marriage back) in the Southwark / Lambeth area. That way it might be possible to (a) get an address, (b) name of widow, (c) use this to re-check 1881. Best wishes Sarah Dear Sandi, I had a look for the elusive James Sullivan Snr; there were no possible matches from Sept 1906 back to Mar 1904; I then resumed Mar 1901 back to Mar 1899, where I found an entry for James Sullivan, Lambeth, aged 66, ref. 1d 740. I still have to check back further, but this could be 'our' man. He would have been born c. 1833, making him 43 when James was born - and 48 in the 1881 census. However this is a little old, especially if the family I identified at St Olave are correct. I don't suppose you have the names of James & Annie's children? Sometimes parents' names are used - eg one might reflect the name of James's mother. Sarah Fantastic set of notes on the Harman family! The names of the Sullivan girls may be a clue, but it depends - they clearly didn't use Sarah Harman's name. I'll continue the death search and recommend a list of possibles (I'm now less convinced that yesterday's find is 'our' man, mainly because of the age gap & 1881 data. Sarah Dear Sandi, I wish I could bring better news, but all 5 certificates for 1878 failed to produce a match for James, Ann and James. Would you like me to continue for the other possible years (1875 & 1879)? To be honest, I think the baptism took place in Ireland, and the census data & other information is misleading. After all, if James was told that he was born in Lambeth from an early age, there is no reason why he would doubt that information. It is the only reason I can think of why there are no matching birth certs. Of the 7, only 3 had James Sillivan listed as father, but none of these had a mother Ann(e) - a Mary, Bridget and a Margaret (who I think I picked up in the 1901 census). Short of (a) widening the search beyond London (v. costly), or (b) look in the remaining years between 1875-1879. I think neither approach is likely to produce the results you hope - though of the 2 the latter is perhaps preferable - as I think the 1881 census data indicates that we have found the family, but that they falsified their returns and stated they had all been born in Lambeth when clearly none had; or that James jnr's age was false. The only alternative is a trawl of parish registers to see if there were any James's baptized in Lambeth c.1875-1880, though once again I am not confident of success. My father was George Edward (08. 12. 1898 � 02. 06. 1970). From your published tree I noted that Julie Harman (now Fountain), Ron Harman and David Harman were all contributors. Julie�s grandfather was my dad�s brother, her father and his brother being my cousins who I knew of but had never met. I e-mailed Julie and we have been exchanging information. From the information I gave Julie on my grandfather�s 3 marriages she has found great deal more family information including the name of the second wife. I do not know if Julie has been in touch with you yet with the new information as she had mislaid your new e-mail address and we had to wait for Ron to supply it. There is still more information to find but we are getting there. I have also been in touch with Ron and David. It must be difficult for you carrying out this research from Canada, we live in Yorkshire and have to go to London to research, there are not many records kept in Yorkshire for London based families and as we are also tracing various other family lines it is slow work. Before I found your site I had never found anything very useful on the internet.
