Notes for Hendrie Goldring:

Regarding the Richard GOLDRING baptized on 26/11/1714 I can tell you that he was an elder borther of my direct descendant John GOLDRING who was baptized on 20/2/1720 at Rogate. Their parents were Henry GOLDRING and Mary FLUTER who married on 10/6/1713 at Chithurst. They had at least seven children between 1714 and 1728.

If however Richard was baptized on 6/4/1712 there are two possibilities as to who his father was, it was either as John or Richard GOLDRING. I can confirm that John is related to my tree from an earlier period, but do not know of Richard connection with the family. That said GOLDRING was a uncommon name and still relatively is in the UK, but Rogate was indeed a hub of the family name and I have no doubt that he is related somewhere. Notes for Richard Goldring:

From: Roberts [mailto:In Family Contacts( at )iprimus. com. au]

If however Richard was baptized on 6/4/1712 there are two possibilities as to who his father was, it was either as John or Richard GOLDRING. I can confirm that John is related to my tree from an earlier period, but do not know of Richard connection with the family. That said GOLDRING was a uncommon name and still relatively is in the UK, but Rogate was indeed a hub of the family name and I have no doubt that he is related somewhere Thus my own latter work/speculation suggests that both these Richard GOLDRINGs could well be the one and same person. And that he was baptized either on 6/4/1712 at Rogate (parents Richard and Elizabeth) or 26/11/1714 (parents Henry and Mary).

Richard GOLDRING and Elizabeth BROOKER on 26/4/1731 at Rogate as well as a Richard GOLDRING and Elizabeth MESSER on 6/1/1740 at the neighbouring village of Trotton. Indeed my very own GOLDRING family held farms at both Rogate and Trotton and they are still there to this day (I send you some pics in due course) From the 1731 marriage no children are known of- are the Registers incomplete, partly missing, did the wife die, did they move elsewhere? - we do not know. Possibly the 1740 marriage could well be the same Richard GOLDRING remarrying ? - this though is pure speculation on my behalf. The only corresponding baptisms for parents named Richard and Elizabeth in this immediate period do not start until 1746 and cease in 1757. What of the period to 1740 to 1746, perhaps there were no children, or surviving children that had the opportunity to be baptized from the first years of this marriage ?

Sandi's comments: I would assume that my Thomas is from the marriage of Richard and Elizabeth Messer?. About 16 years after the marriage, if he was from Brooker that would be about 27 years? making the mother up there in years. For the delay in children, I notice that there is not a Richard in this family, which is strange for those days so there may have been children that didnt survive. Speculation is all we have with these records.

Sent: Sunday, June 11, 2006 01:03 AM Dear Sandi Great to hear from you, indeed you certainly have done some up dates on your WebSite since I last looked at it a week or two ago. Must of the GOLDRING 'stuff' you've updated relates exactly to what I've recorded here on the Canadian link. . . .

I believe that Thomas GOLDRING who married Grace Hunt at Yapton on 21/9/1776 was actually possibly baptized on 8/5/1757 at Rogate and not Yapton - and that he was not the son of a Edmund GOLDRING and Elizabeth, but he was the son of a Richard GOLDRING and Elizabeth (This is suggestion is contrary to your own research Sandi- but I could well stand corrected here. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . )

Now while the Parish Registers for West Sussex are relatively well recorded for this period it is difficult to speculate as to who and where this Richard GOLDRING and Elizabeth hailed from/and or were married. Certainly from an earlier time the village of Rogate was a hot bed of the GOLDRING name, with some of the family recorded as fighting as Archers at Agincourt in the early 1400s. There are two possible recorded marriages of interest as follows-

The only corresponding baptisms for parents named Richard and Elizabeth in this immediate period do not start until 1746 and cease in 1757. What of the period to 1740 to 1746, perhaps there were no children, or surviving children that had the opportunity to be baptized from the first years of this marriage ?

For the purpose of my own research a distant GOLDRING descendant of mine had within his own research some details of a line of our GOLDRING ancestors that had emigrated to Canada circa 1823- and wheres the connection is has intrigued me ever since I became aware of it. There is scattering of speculation that two brothers were fleeing possible smuggling persecution which almost always ended in a minimum of 6 months hard labour in those days, and that one of the borther s was only about 13 years old. One of these brothers William originally learnt the boot trade in Toronto before making a small fortune plying the Great Lakes out of Port Whitby with his fleet of vessels. I actually have a pic taken from a painting or William here- alas in extremely poor condition. .

My own research on my GOLDRING lines has been independently researched by Debretts Researchers in the UK and they have concurred that my findings (and that of several other GOLDRING researchers) is correct. Debretts research however provides no clues as to where the possible Canadian connection is hidden. Debretts used Poll Tax records in conjunction with the various Parish Registers to complete their research.

Thus my own latter work/speculation suggests that both these Richard GOLDRINGs could well be the one and same person. And that he was baptized either on 6/4/1712 at Rogate (parents Richard and Elizabeth) or 26/11/1714 (parents Henry and Mary).

Hello ! Found your WONDERFUL and ENORMOUS family tree on the WebSite, by entering my youngest child's name into the GOOGLE web-site (Ruth Goldring). As you can see from our e-mail address, we are a GOLDRING family too, and have traced back our family tree back to West Susssex, England. From an initial glance through your WebSite there are enough first names e. g. Edmund, locations e. g. Pagham and occupations e. g. Agricultural Labourer to say that our tree links into yours. I've printed off the first 10 pages which include all the Goldring's in your tree and will attempt to confirm the link to our family tree. The Goldring name is not common, here in the UK, even now and we are the only Goldring's in Somerset. There is a concentration of Goldring's still in West Sussex, and Portsmouth, Hampshire.

So will contact you again when we can confirm the links. Regards to you all Mr. and Mrs. Richard Goldring P. S. Our son's name is James Goldring, named after his gt-gt-gt-gt grandfather !

Notes for George Goldring:

Another interesting enigma that currently goes unanswered in my mind, is George [1796]. He presumably married an Elizabeth (Betsey) and emigrated to Canada in 1845, was on the 1851 Census and died in 1852. The intriguing thing here is a Mrs. Joan Bryant [1918], born in England, daughter of a George Goldring, claims George [1796] is a direct ancestor of hers (in fact she has a portrait of him in her home), she claimed. She and her husband immigrated to Canada in 1957 and settled in Kitchener. She spent 6 years in the seventies researching the Canadian Goldring's, but was never able to establish a link to George [1796]. She was apparently corresponding with deceased cousin Don, as well as Warren Goldring and other Ontario Goldring's during these years, as much of Don's Goldring material came from this Joan Bryant. If George [1796] emigrated to Canada in 1845, I don't see how Joan could be a descendant of him, if she only arrived in Canada in 1957, unless George [1796] & Betsey had children in England and left them behind when emigrating to Canada, which would seem rather odd, so the whole business remains an enigma. In any case, we owe her a debt of gratitude for the time and effort she put in gathering together Ontario Goldring history. Thomas Deeth [tsdeeth( at )telus. net]

After this I can find no further record of him leaving VDL, or on censuses or as having a family

It was actually Mary Hanlon who applied to marry John in 1844- because she herself was a Convict. (Female convists were encouraged to find a husband so that they were less of a demand on authorities). Many convicts were not kept in prisons as we know them today and were sent out to work for persons around Van Diemans Land where ever possible. So they obviously met outside prison walls.

Further enquiries show that Mary Hanlon was convicted of a crime in Ireland and sentenced to transportation to VDL. She sailed from Dublin on 4/9/1842 on the convict vessel 'Waverley', arriving at Hobart Town on 15/12/1842.

There is a file available on Mary at the Archives of Tasmania (Ref- CON 52/2p 71)- but as she is so remotely connected to my interests I will not for now be ordering in the file. It would however when the opportuntiy 'arrives' be nice to find out a bit more about her- given they were both convicts/ex-convicts im sure you will agree. Maybe in due course I will look further into these two.?

Further on Johns convict file- its very difficlut to read, but I have managed to transcribe most of it. On some of the early entries when in VDL and he was reported for various infringments etc. Some of the early entries begin with 'Constable/' - on looking into this further on the weekend I read that some convicts were made police constables - mostly prisoners of the crown were selected from convict ships to assist in the recognition of fellow prisoners should they escape- and the constables were rewarded accordingly. Indeed this system proved somewhat successful when hunting down escaped convicts. Indeed a great many early police constables on VDL were convicts or ticket of leave men, although in later years it appears the convicts had at least to pass their probation period (usually 6 months or more), anf later the regulations were tightened even more and a convict had to have obtained their Ticket of Leave before being considered for the police force..

Most frustratiing though is that I can find no later records of John or Mary- the VDL/Tasmanian records are fairly comprehensive- I cannot find them leaving the Island either............. There are so many speculative thoughts and ideas that I could persue further here....Regards Conrad

James son of Thomas was convicted in Bognor, Sussex in 1827 of stealing and smuggling six gallons of brandy and fined 100 pounds. The actual reason James and younger brother, Henry emigrated, was because both families were on relief and were a financial drain on the town coffers of the local parish. The South Bersted town councillors paid 80 pounds towards their passage to York, Upper Canada in 1832.

Notes for Samuel Goldring:

Martha Emily Goldring - pure speculation here. The father could possibly be Samuel [1825-](10. ii). Samuel, we think, married an Ellen. In the Toronto street directories, he shows up as a butcher in 1862, a carter in 1863 and a mariner in 1868. Samuel & Ellen were probably the parents of Mary Louisa [1864-1864], #06879, who died at 8 weeks. This Martha Emily could well be a second daughter, born the following year, 1865. I've speculated on item #12859 , being the death record of Samuel [1825] (10. ii). I realize, the record indicates the birth was in Scotland, and at age 50, would make Samuel's birth date 1827, (not 1825), but perhaps it's close enough. Also, I think item #13879 could well be Samuel's wife, Ellen. Her passing at age 45, puts her birth date at about 1833, placing her squarely in the birth range as mother to both Martha Emily & Mary Louisa. Also, could item #19259, another Mary Louisa [1869-], possibly be a third daughter of this marriage? Thomas Deeth

Notes for William Goldring:

English Immigrant Voices: Page 114 and 115

James S. Goldring was 23 and his brother, William, was 19 when they emigrated in 1832 from South Bersted, a coastal parish, with their parents, James and Sarah (Pratt) Goldring, and their sister and brothers, Frances, Eleanor, Michael, George, and Edward. James Sr's brother, Henry also emigrated at the same time with his wife, Mary Ann (Rayner), and four children, Eleanor, Samuel, Emma, and Caroline. A James Goldring - either the father or the son - had in the past been fined for smuggling. The Goldring's settled on Lake Ontario near York (Toronto). Their first employment came from government: in October 1832, John Gamble reported James Sr, Henry, and James Fr. on his "List of Emigrants employed on the Lake Road.

April 9th, 1833

Dear Uncle,

I take the opportunity of writing to you, hoping to find you all in good health, as it leaves us all at present. But father has been very near of losing his life: he was ill for 6 months. It was in the autumn, and the doctor gave him over; but he is quite well now, and just begun sowing.

We have taken a house, and bought 2 cows; and some hogs, but we have killed them. We have got 1 acre for a garden, and the garden runs down to Lake Ontario, were we can get fish, and ducks, if we have any time to spare. the pigeons go away in the winter, the same as the swallows; so when they first come, I can get a plenty of them: they are blue with a long tail. we have not got any land that will suit us yet; we fund the country just as that book was that Mr. Phillips* had; so we all like the country very well. We need not want to come back again at any rate.

we have a very pleasant house, with a very large ball room at the top; we have had one ball since we have been here. Now I will tempt laundress women a little: they get from 2s. 65d to 3s. per dozen, for washing. It would have been a good job, if my aunt fanny had come with us.

We live about 8 miles above York, Upper Canada. It is pleasant here now. We had not a very cold winter this winter; but it was colder than it is there; but we can get firing for nothing here, that is a fine thing. My brother James is hired out for one year, for L20. ; but that is a very low wages. I have a plenty of work at my trade, more than I can do very well. I can earn as much in one day, as I did there in a week; so we can afford to enjoy ourselves. There is no good beer in (this) country' but there is some very good grog; and we can sit down and rink it, as well as Mr. R. A. Esp. We have nobody to run over us here, and to order us out of their fields. We can take our gun, and go a deer hunting, when we likes; so we hope all that can come, will have heart enough.

We have not seen (Thomas) Joice, nor heard from him; for he had 50 acres of land gave him on account of his being an old soldier. Any old soldier can get land if he seek for it. We saw Mr. R. Wonham last summer, but he is come back to England to fetch his family; but he left his eldest boy here, at the collage, until he return. (John) Hollis, the tailor, is in York, doing very well. My uncle Harry has took a house and 3 acres of land. C. Raynor is hired in a saw mill; I think he will get on after a bit. I should be glad if you could find out Stowe's directions, or any one else that we know. I have sent two letters before, but I don't think that you ever had them.

If you come, board yourselves if you can; bring cheese, red herrings, a little brandy, and bacon. But you will wish yourselves back again when you are sea sick; but keep up your spirits. So no more at present from your well wishing friends.

"Henry and James both evidently continued to live west of Toronto in Etobicoke. James was still there in 1851. In the 1851 census for Etobicoke, James Sr. and Sarah gave their ages as 69 and 65. A James Goldring, probably Jr., is reported as a sailor or mariner in Toronto directories in the decade from 1846 to 1857; there is also a James Goldring who was a labourer in the 1851 census. "

Would this be the one for whom you found the death registration? who was buried in St. James Cemetery?

"William Goldring is described in the 1851 census as a widower, aged 40, working as a shoemaker and living on 2-3 acres on lot D, concession 1, Etobicoke. By 1888, he had a brick house at 75 Duke St, Toronto. William died in 1891 leaving an estate of $56,000. "

The Junior League of the Gay Nineties-

A William Goldring arrived in Toronto, Canada from Sussex ch was a William Goldring who emigrated to Canada from Sussex. The following is taken from C. H. J Sniders story in the magazine - in 1823 when he was a mere lad of fourteen. He first learned shoemaking and liked shoemaking all his days but he became a vessel owner.

Up to and past the start of the 20th century there existed schoonerdom around Toronto, a sort of junior league of vessels of about 100 tons burden, too small to carry grain, coal or timber in the competition with the seniors leaguers of "Old Canallers" which ran up to 800 tons. however these vessels were capable of making long voyages and often did so all over the Lake for cargoes, some of them seemed too good for the sand, stone and gravel trade known as stone-hooking to which they finally turned- for this was the preserve of little fellows of twenty tons and up, some of them ex-yatchs, many, scows that carried most of their cargoes on deck and a few of them large schooners, too feeble to be trusted with full cargoes of more valuable freight.

The stone-hookers formed a tatterdemalion company with sails that looked like last winters overcoats after a hard Summer with the moths, or which had been patched up so much that their original texture had disappeared. The hulls of these relics were often held together with strips of tin tacked over the leaky seams to keep the oakum in and the water out, and the only paint some of them knew was put on with a tarbrush. In shining contrast were half a dozen 100 tonners hailing from Toronto which did not disdain to compete with the ragamuffins for the stone trade when they could not get the odd remaining freight or coal for some out of the way port, or a picnic party to take away for a fortnights cruise.

These little beauties were not in the hands of the big vessel men, who had come down on their luck, invariably they were owned and worked by men whose boyhood had been spent on the simplicities and hardships of stone-hooking.

Noticeably the smartness even among the junior leaguers in 1900 were three or four vessels which formed the Goldring fleet. This was not a Corporation unit. It was a monument to individual enterprise and hard work, and its history winds through a century via Toronto, Mimico, Etobicoke, Toronto again and ultimately Port Whitby.

William Goldring (above) had wharf in Toronto at the foot of Frederick Street, Curries wharf it was called with warehousing and storage space in it, and thither the Goldring fleet plied their trade. He also had a ten roomed house at 75 Duke Street which is now a factor. After his death in 1890, about 1890, his sons Edward, Richard, Frank and Charles concentrated on Port Whitby with their vessels. an elder son John, who had settled in Toronto a long time, continued to use this port for his schooner named Helen. He had a home here and a farm near Bowmanville.

The Goldring fleet at one time numbered five vessels, the Mary Ann, the Helen, the H. M. Ballou, the Northwest and the Maple Leaf. That was the greatest number that was in the fleet at any one time, but several other vessels were in and out of it, for a long time it was a one ship fleet starting with an American schooner named Ploughboy which had been seized and sold as a smuggler in 1836. She was through with all that before the first Goldring had anything to do with her. Later there was the scow Betsey a floating home for a family of eight, and the Jenny Lind with a square topsail, as typical of her time as Jenny Linds own crinoline.

Then John, the eldest boy, struck out on his own and came back form Lake Eric in 1873 with the two masted scow John Pudsley which he rebuilt as a schooner and renamed the Helen. William Goldring, the father, exchanged the old Jenny Lind for the new Mary E. Ferguson, and young Dick, seventeen, but already twelve years the sailor, walked her deck as Captain. Brother Ted, a few years Dicks senior, had in turn the Belle of Dunbarton, and the Marcia A. Hall, and the Ballou and possibly the Mary Ann or the Parthenon whose place in the Goldring fleet is uncertain.

By the end of the 19th century, the Parthenon had been bought by the McDonald family, well known on the West shore of the Prince Edward County, and rebuilt, until, according to the late Amos McDonald, County Warden, "there was nothing left of the original but her hickory jib-boom". She was renamed the Robert McDonald" but she still looked very much like the smart Maple Leaf or the H. M. Balloi or the Northwest int the Goldring fleet of the gay nineties.

John Goldring steered a course pretty much by himself through boyhood, he often sailed the Helen alone. He put a (------)? on her forward and a gasoline engine aft for easier handling. He was sailing the Helen single handed although he was over seventy, and she was a handful for three when he lost her between the rocks on Bluff Point at Port Oshawa in 1922, fifty years after he had brought her down from Lake Eric. The Northwest, built in Bronte in 1882 according to the register, was sailed for many years by Ted Goldring and his brother Frank. She was about the same size as the Maple Leaf, 75ft. long deck, 20ft. beam, 6ft. depth according to the book, but she registered 57 tons to the Maple Leafs 59. She was straighter at the stem, less of a clipper but sailed well. There was always great rivalry among the Highland Beauty, H. M. Ballou, Northwest, Maple Leaf, Parthenon, Newsboy, Madeline, and Rapid City no matter who owned or sailed them for they were all built for speed, most by the Dorland Bros. in Bronte or James Andrew in Oakville.

The Highland Beauty was an ex-steam-yatch and the Ballou an American bottom built at Oak Orchard. The Rapid City, a Dorland number, named for a little place in Manitoba to make her go fast, was sailed at the time by Charles Goldring the youngest in the family. The Helen was not a clipper like these, but a good carrier, as said, usually ploughed a line furrow. She got a freight of grain out of Whitby as late as 1893, and barley from Burlington, and occasionally apples or the odd freight of coal, but usually her cargo was stone or gravel.

The Northwest last heard of in Chicago as a camp cruiser is the sole survivor of the junior league, and is believed to be positively the last of the Lake Schooners which were once a thousand strong. The Maple Leaf was wrecked in the St. Lawrence in 1926, the Helen went out in 1922. The Newsboy was by that time a hulk and was broken up in Ashcroft Bay, where she had been a houseboat.

The Rapid City with a new gasoline engine, and new ownership, went down off the Highlands in 1917, the Madeline had been sunk in Port Credit by this time. The Ballou had been burned at Bellville in 1907, the Snowbird sunk in the ice in Toronto bay in 1904, and is there yet. The Highland Beauty, sold to the eastwar burst with a cargo of swelling peas when she hit the breakwater at Cape St. Vincent in about 1903, the Robert McDonald was burned, the P. E. Young was blown up at the exhibition in 1898. The Jessie McDonald mistook the light at Whitby and left her bones beside the breakwater in 1893 and at about the same time the Marcia A. Hall sank on the South shore or crawled into the boneyard at Port Dalhousie to die.

The Mary Ann, not a junior leaguer but an out and out scow was dismantled at Whitby and the Flora was wrecked at Oakville in 1894.

In 1873 Captain Gutcher purchased the schooner Belle, and sailed her three seasons, doing a general trading business on his own account, doing well. He then sold her to a Mr. Goldring, and joined the schooner David Sharp as mate.

More About Fanny Smithers:

Also Known As: Annie Turvey

Notes for Fanny Smithers:

A family of Smithers were on the same boat that William and his family came over to Canada on. At the moment I'm inclined to lean toward Annie Smithers as William's first wife, and here's why. We have a printed record of daughter, Annie Jane's marriage which states her mother is Fannie Smithers. We have a printed record of son, George Henry's second marriage which states his mother is Ann Trvey (not Turvey). As Trvey is a most unlikely name, we are dealing hear with either an obvious typo, or whoever transcribe the written record had a difficult time deciphering the spelling of the name because it was somewhat illegible. I see a strong resemblance between the written names Trvey and Kivell. If you're writing the name Kivell and starting out with a scriptlike capital "K", then lightening up on the tail of the "K" as you come into the "iv", it could easily appear as an "rv", then the "e" and the double "ll" interpreted as a "y", thus the typed result ends up a "Trvey". Do you bye it? So, that's the first reason I lean to Fanny. Secondly, if I'm not mistaken, on George's second marriage certificate, he (or his brother Richard) indicates George's mother is Ann or Annie, not Fanny. George's older sibling's, John Henry [1845] & Annie Jane [1847] record "Fanny" as their mother. If we could dig up a copy of older brother, William [1843]'s marriage certificate in New York, USA, that may swing the pendulum. My gut feel is Ann Turvey never existed, that George's mother was in fact Matilda Ann Kivell (thus George & Richard's claim than Ann is his mother), while the older siblings mother is Fanny Smithers. Also, I've located an entry for a Fanny Smithers (born 1816, Seven Oaks, Kent, England) on the Family Search International Genealogical Index. She would make a pretty good fit for William's first wife, if she or her family emigrated to Ontario. On the same site, I can't locate an Ann Turvey record anywhere close to the timetable we're looking for. There's no trace of William's first wife's death record, nor is she intered in the family plot, seems rather odd

JOHN SHANNON (deceased) was one of the pioneer farmers of South Dumfries Township. He was born in Copetown, Ontario , 31st August, 1806, and his parents David and Jane Shannon, who carried on farming occupations, were natives of New Brunswick, from which province they moved to Copetown, where they resided until the death of David. The widow and family then moved into Dumfries, where she died. John, of whom this sketch is written, was united in marriage, 6th December, 1837, with Francis Goldring, daughter of James and Sarah Goldring, natives of England. Frances was born in that country, 12th February, 1817, and emigrated to Canada with her parents in 1832, when they settled in Toronto. Mr. Shannon was an adherent of the Methodist Church, and his widow is a member of the same body. He was educated at a common school, and when he started he bought 100 acres on which the widow and family now reside. He was looked upon in his life-time as one of the best and most successful farmers in Brant County. Mr. and Mrs. Shannon had a family of ten children, seven of whom survive, viz., Sarah J., Wife of William Laughlan; Ellen, wife of David Curry; James, married; John, married; Frances A. ; Joseph, married; and George. Edward, who was born 11th July, 1863, died 2nd May, 1880. Dear Sandi, This was a surprize; to find my great great grandfather's name through Google.

I will take more time to read your very extensive notes but in the meantime this is what I know

Captain Michael Goldring married Bridget O'Holloran in Toronto when I don't know and produced at least two children Mary Ann and Sarah. As the family never talked about Bridget and Sarah was never seen by me I only have gossip from a great aunt by marriage that Bridget took the children from Toronto island where they were born and raised to Toronto and that she was in poor health and died young. Michael Goldring died from exposure on Lake Ontario. I found records of two ships in the Maritime Museum in Kingston - the Maple Leaf and one other (I have to look it up). Mary Ann Goldring married Stanley Kimber and they produced 6 children William, Harry, Ernest, Alice, May, Jenny . The three girls never married as their mother insisted they stay home and care for her. William and Harry became prominent lawyers in Toronto. Ernest was my grandfather. The mystery is that there seems Rito be no record of Bridget O'Holloran that I was able to find. I have the original proposal from Stanley Kimber to Mary Ann Goldring. Thank you for all this great work. Victoria Henry

More About Sarah O'Holloran:

Medical Condition: A wasting or consumption of the tissue; -formerly applied to many wasting diseases, but now usually restricted to pulmonary phthisis or consumption.

Cause Of Death: Phthisic

Also Known As: Bridget

Notes for Sarah O'Holloran:

The mystery is that there seems to be no record of Bridget O'Holloran that I was able to find. Is Bridget the same person as Bridget? I was told by my great aunt - Harry's wife (the nephew in the document) that Michael's wife was Bridgett O"Holloran tho she certainly never suggested there was a second wife. She did say Bridgett died young at the age of 44 I think.

Notes for Alice May Goldring:

May was the only divorced woman in my family for years. She and Ubert had no children. They did keep their niece, Ruth, for a time when she was 12 or 13 and "Bert" made a pass at her. No one said much about him in my lifetime. May was also the first "career woman" I ever knew. She was a secretary. When she died, she was legally deaf and blind and she had arthritis so bad she couldn't do much. But we would go to see her and once she figured out who we were she was so happy. She figured out how many corridors she had to walk to get her mile in every day. And she appreciated what she had. Once we visited and someone had given her three apples. She couldn't see them or listen to her records, but she could feel them and smell them. I learned a lot from her. Debbie Martinez

Hi Sandi,

Well, with this latest revelation of marriage certificates, it's really opened up a bag of worms. I'm banging my head trying to come up with an explanation. Not having a clear answer, I've decided to don my Detective Columbo trenchcoat and dive into this unfathomable mystery. My thoughts here may well be disjointed, stream of thought kind of thing, but anything may be better than nothing, and something I utter may trigger a thought in your minds. Three heads are better than one in all this, I think.

So, what are the known facts at the moment. William was born in 1812. He supposedly married a "Matilda". We have no marriage certificate to support this. However, there is no doubt, Matilda was the mother of the youngest six of his purported 10 children, namely Sarah, Harriet, Edmund, Richard, Charles & Francis. She died in 1865 at age 31, according to the death certificate, right? Was there anything else on the death certificate other than Matilda, wife of William Goldring, died age 31? Any first or last names of a mother or father? Place of birth? Is it clearly 31 years of age, or could it be 37? Any clues at all? At the moment it places her birth date at about 1834. She therefore couldn't be the mother of William [1843], George Henry [1845] or Annie Jane [1847]. At this point, the mother of George Henry [1851/52] is much debatable. Therefore, William had a relationship with another woman prior to Matilda, right! Her name is presumably Annie T(u)rvey. We know nothing of her, no birth date, no date of death, no marriage record. Did they indeed marry? I have a date of 1835, which sort of fits. William is a young strapping lad of 33, nicely established in Canada, living the good life (compared to Britain), ready to take on a bride. However, this date bothers me a bit. If his relationship with Annie (say) began in 1835, why would they be barren for 8 years, then suddenly start pumping out kids regularly in 1843, 1845 & 1847. William's track record with Matilda is pretty prolific also, six kids in 10 years. So, I'm much more incline to think the William & Annie relationship (marriage?) began in the early 1840's. Annie doesn't appear with William & the family on the 1852 census, leaving us with the assumption she passed away sometime after Annie Jane's birth in 1847 and before the census. The mention of William being a widower supports this conclusion. Also, the occasional mention of John Henry in the Whitby "chronicles" being a half brother of the younger boys supports the 2 family supposition. So far, so good.

Lets fast forward to George for a moment. We have marriage certificates for both his wives. In both instances, he claims his father is William, right? In his marriage to Elizabeth, he claims his mother is Matilda, in his marriage to Charlotte, he claims his mother is Annie. What a conundrum! My first thought. Was George's mother perhaps an Annie Matilda T(u)rvey, who married a Mr. Henry. Mr. Henry promptly dies, allowing a rapid romance between William & housekeeper Matilda to develop, resulting in

Matilda bearing George in 1851/52. References exist that William was a widower and that Matilda (Mrs. Henry) was a widow, so that's a possibility. If so, who was the first wife? We'd be back to square one on that one. And this scenario also excludes a possible connection to the Hermers name. It also raises the question of where Matilda was residing at this time. If George was born to Matilda and fathered by William, why do neither appear on the census? So, the theory of Annie & Matilda being one and the same, in my mind, doesn't appear to hold up.

But why would George indicate he was the son of William (on both marriage occasions) if he was born a "Henry". What if Mr. Henry's given name was William? Aha! Who was the father? Do we have a birth record for George? Was George named "George Henry Goldring" at birth? Or was he named "George H. (Hermers) Henry at birth? The census has made reference to Hermers or Hmr. as his middle name. If Hermers is in the equation, doesn't that also shoot down the Annie Matilda T(u)rvey theory? Family lore has it that George was born a stepson and took on the name Goldring.

There seems to be a very strong bent toward the "Henry" name in George's life. Of his 13 offspring, six of them, (including 2 girls), were given the middle name of Henry. Why? For George's 4 younger brothers, with a total offspring of 27, only one had a middle name of Henry, the ill fated Albert [1892], son of Edmund & Mary Stutt. Was George a full brother, or a step-brother? George is recorded at times to be a sailor, but I'm not aware of any reference to him in any of the Goldring fleet stories I've seen, only the occasional reference to the half brother, John Henry. Seems odd. Why? Is it because he was a step and not a full? George must have known who his real father was. If it was William, why the penchant for "Henry"? If it was Henry, why "William" on his marriage to Elizabeth? If Mr. Henry's given name was William, we've solved part of the enigma. It's a reasonably probable and believable theory, I think.

But why would George, in 1920, after all those years, disclose in his marriage to Charlotte, that his mother was not Matilda? Just doesn't make sense! The man is 68 or 69 years of age. Mind you, old men are known to do funny things. You guys don't have to agree with me on that one, OK!!!

So, where does all this leave us. To date, I' ve located nothing on the names Henry, Hermers, T(u)rvey or T(e)rvey that would aid us in deciphering this riddle. Firstly, if we could uncover birth records for William [1843], John Henry [1845[ or Annie Jane [1847], it might be very helpful. Secondly, if we could locate marriage records for William, it would be of immense help. A caveat here, George's marriage records didn't help, did they? Thirdly, a successful search for any death records for an Annie Goldring or an Annie T(u)rvey for the period from 1847 to 1853 would be a huge bonus. Fourthly, George's birth record could prove very enlightening. Finally, are we aware of any of William Goldring's descendants out there (particularly George's), who just might be able to shed some light on all this. You'd think there'd be somebody out there with some additional knowledge of their ancestor, William.

Inspector Clue-so here, (age 70) welcomes your comments. Regards, Tom

I think what the death record tells me, is that George's younger brother, Richard, who is the informant here, didn't know George's mother's maiden name. Would that be Annie's maiden name? Or Matilda's maiden name? He informs us his brother's name is George Henry Goldring, not George Hermers Goldring, so maybe Richard never new his mothers maiden name of Hermers (if it was Hermers). Richard, 7 years younger than George, no doubt always new brother George as George Goldring. Did Richard and his siblings even know if he was a step brother (if he was)?

Did George even know? I would have thought yes. There's still this "Henry" name thing, right. So, I'm not certain this obituary tells us anything.

This second attachment looks very interesting. What are we actually looking at here? Is this our Matilda, age 20 and single on the 1851 census, with a surname of Kivell or Kivele? I see the middle initial is A. Could that stand for Annie? Her listed occupation is as a servant and/or "housekeeper", for the Goldring family? Is that George A. Henery or Heney just beneath her? Where are these people residing? Is this an area of Georgetown? You may well have hit on something here, Sandy.

Keep up the good work, you'll crack it yet. Tom
