History of Scarboro. Published 1898 We get a quaint little peep of life in the bush from the records of the Walton family, John Walton, born in Cumberland, England, in 1799, emigrated to Canada, with his parents, in 1818. Having worked in the lead mines in England, he turned his knowledge to account by sinking wells. Many of those in the neighbourhood of Gooderham and Worts' distillery were sunk by John Walton. In 1823 he settled in Scarboro, on Lot 35, concession 2, and lot 35, concession 3, for which he paid $1 an acre. He afterwards sold the north half to Robert Oliver, and lived on the south half. He married Mary Thomson, third daughter of the first settler in Scarboro. Mrs. Walton carried her butter and eggs to York market, a distance of ten miles, by a footpath through the woods. She received four pence a pound for her butter, or one York-shilling for two pounds, and the same for her eggs per dozen, taking groceries and other necessaries instead of cash. One takes an interest in learning that at the tend of three years the family fortunes had prospered well enough to provide the worthy daughter of a brave mother with a mare called Kate and a side-saddle on which she might ride to market. Glendinning, lot 29, concession 2, is the son of James and Elizabeth (Wilkinson) Glendinning, who came from Dumfriesshire, Scotland, at an early date, and settled in Scarboro, where the father died some years ago. The family left behind consisted of four sons and one daughter, viz. : Francis, Walter J., Charles and John; the daughter married J. G. Thompson of this township. The subject of this sketch was born March 3, 1836, and early in life learned the trade of carpenter, which he follows at the present time. He belongs to the Presbyterian Church, and in politics is a Liberal Conservative. (vol. II, p. 270)

Walter Glendinning, lot 29, concession 1, is the youngest son of Archibald and Jane Glendinning. His father and family emigrated from Dumfriesshire, Scotland, in 1820, and settled on lot 28, concession 1. Archibald married after he came to Canada; his family consisted of three sons and five daughters, viz. : Elizabeth, Isabella, Archibald (dead), Margaret, Janet, Robert, Walter and Jane. Mr. Glendinning, sen'r, kept the first store in the, near Ellesmere, and was also postmaster, the latter position being now in the possession of Walter. He was a Major in the militia, and was at the head of his company during the Yonge Street skirmish in 1837; his military suit and sword are yet preserved as relics by the family. He was one of the first Councillors on the old District Council and was also Secretary of the Scarboro School Commissioners, and retained that office several years. He was also Assessor and Collector of the Municipality for a lengthened period. Although principally engaged in mercantile pursuits, he and his brother William farmed at one time four hundred acres of land. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He died on May 29, 1883, after a long and industrious life, leaving behind him a fine property and, what is still better, a respected and honoured name. Walter (whose name heads this sketch) married Isabella, daughter of John Robertson, a descendant of an old pioneer of Simcoe, by whom he had six children, one son and five daughters. Like his father he is a member of the Presbyterian Church, and a moderate Conservative in politics. (vol. The question of a First Nations person occurred in connection to Isaac Fairchild m. Lucy Kilbourne. Isaac Farichild was a very close friend of Loyalist Mohawk War Chief Joseph Brant, Butler's Rangers, Fort Niagara. My 3 x great grandfather, Irish Palatine and Loyalist Captain George Lawrence also fought with Joseph Brant in Butler's Rangers. So, I had been looking for some kind of connection, but there was none. George Lawrence married Sarah (Sary) Beacroft. The name is spelled in various was, and she may be related to the infamous Benjamin Beecroft of Schoharie, New York. That relationship is conjectural at this point. While the interred remains are still there, the monuments are not. I believe a few were moved to Wexford Heights Cemetery, some were vandalized or stolen and what remained, I believe, were buried beneath a stone cairn which was erected on the site in 1989. I have not visited the site in some time so I can't comment on what's still there. The Cemetery has been surveyed and registered on title as a Cemetery to prevent any construction on the site. I believe title lies with the United Church under the supervision of the Wexford Heights Church. The visible stones were transcribed in 1977 and again in 1986. Ones of interest to you include: Sanderson, Charles, died 16 July, 1884, 65 years. Sanderson, Susanna, died 20 March 1898, 69 years, wife of Charles Sanderson, Seneca Charles, died 18 September 1865, 6 years,7 days, son of Charles and Susannah Sanderson. Sanderson, William, son of -. Ann -erson The Cemetery was also known locally as the Fitzpatrick Appointment as William Fitzpatrick granted the land for a church and Cemetery shortly after he acquired the property in 1832. While the Cemetery lies on the west side of Victoria Park in the North York community, the church was moved and later replaced by a brick ediface on the Scarborough side of the Town Line. The last know burial there was in 1912 but that was several years after Susanna was buried there in 1898. Nobody was interred between those dates and nobody else after four children of the Maginn family were interred in 1891 after they died of diphtheria. Some say people were afraid to set foot in the old Cemetery after that.

Thomas Walton, deceased, a descendant of one of the pioneers of Scarboro, was born in this, January 12, 1828. He died April 17, 1876, leaving a widow and a family of seven children. His wife's maiden name was Fanny Scott; she came from Cumberland, England. Mrs. Walton resides on the old homestead in company with the following sons and daughter: William Albert, Thomas A., Francis E. and Alice. Two daughters are married, Lavinia to William Brown, of Markham, Ontario, Canada, and Mary to Charles Scrivens, of Buffalo. John Wallis, the second son, married a Miss Brown, of this township. The family is one highly respected in the neighbourhood; they are members of the Methodist Church. (vol. You note that should we notice any discrepancies, we should bring these to your attention. I notice that for the wife of Thomas WALTON (#49), you note that she (Fanny SCOTT) was born in Cumberland. While it is true that her family came from the Cumberland/Northumberland border (Knaresdale is actually just inside Northumberland), she was not born there, as far as I can determine. Her father 's (William Scott) obituary notes that the family emigrated in 1831 and that the immigrants were elsewhere in Canada West until they settled in Scarboro in 1835.
