Notes for Nina Elizabeth Closs:

NEIL HONEY [mailto:nhoney1( at )sbcglobal. net] Sent: Saturday, November 5, 2005 6:26 PM Hi, my name is Neil Honey. My maternal grandfather was Calvin Wheeler Percy. His younger half-brother was Frank James Percy. He was married to Nina Claus (Closs ?). Her parents were Aaron and Catherine Elizabeth Laughlin. When I was searching for info on Catherine Laughlin, I happened on your Sullivan Burgess Family Tree. Nina's birthday is the same as I have so I think they are the same person. I have found that Claus is a very common name in the Mohawk tribe of Canada. I have Aaron and his daughter Nina born in the Tyeninaga Mohawk Reservation, sometimes called the Deseranto Reservation, because the town of Deseranto is in the reservation. You have much more info than I have about Nina's children and of course her mother. If you would like any Percy info that I have, you are more than welcome to it. I have Family Tree Maker, Ver 10. On your James Laughlin Tree, you have 2 pages, is there any more ? Nina's son, Roy Franklin Percy is # 230 and is not on the part of the tree that is available. Hoping to hear from you, I remain, Yours truly, Neil

I have one of my Bavarian OHL families who remained in Buffalo, Erie, New York for a time, before re-locating in Woodford Co. (near Peoria) Illinois with other OHL family members who had gone there shortly after arriving from Horstein, Bavaria to Cincinnati, Ohio. They all remained in Woodford Co. for several years, some dying there, and others moving on to KS, OK, and CA. However, the family (of Valentine OHL) http://wc. rootsweb. com/cgi-bin/igm. cgi?op=REG&db=kelnhofer&id=I5324 who stayed for several years in Buffalo, probably had additional children born prior to the ones that accompanied them to Woodford Co. Those children likely married in Buffalo, and remained there. What I am hinting at, is that I think our OHL families might be related. Do you have any additional clues? Karen Eddy

Joanne Davy [mailto:joannedavy( at )hotmail. com] Sent: Sunday, October 30, 2005 7:08 PMTo: Sandi Sullivan cc: joannedavy( at )hotmail. comSubject: Requesting information, The Davy Family Hi Sandi. . . . I think that it's been quite a while since I wrote to you. I just looked at RootsWeb for the first time in quite a while as well. You and everyone else at RootsWeb still have my father-in-law's name as John Petch Davy and is should be Stewart Petch Davy (f. John Woods Davy, m. Janet Cook Petch). When I was looking at John Woods Davy's father's information (that is Stewart Davy, wife Catherine Woods), I seem to have discovered a child that no one in the family that I know of, has ever heard of. You list one of the children of Stewart Davy and Catherine Woods as "Kattie" Davy. You have a reference to the 1901 Census on that page as well. Do you have a copy of their census information for 1901 and if so do you have it in a form that you could email to me? On a related topic, I now know who Janet Cook Petch's parents were. Her mother was Angelina Cook and her father was William Petch. Looking forward to hearing from you. Joanne Davy

Notes for Dr. Edgerton Ross Laughlin:

Dr. Laughlin and his wife D. Mary E. Laughlin nee Bowyer are responsible for collecting the family genealogy and compiling it in 1955. He graduated from the University of Toronto Medical College in 1921, specializing in psychiatry. Since Graduation they worked in several Hospitals for Mental Diseases. He was a prominent Mason and was a member of the Blue Lodge at Belleville, the chapter and commandery at St. Peter, Minnesota, USA., and the Shriners' Iren Temple in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, USA. When Dr. Laughlin and his wife wrote their genealogy, they did it by letter, interview, typewriter and archives. They did not have the access that we have today, by computer, internet, Email and indexes. Some of the notes of Dr. Laughlin that he included in his book: Please note that some of his notes are repeated in every chapter of the book, so I have picked the best of his notes. The information in this genealogy was gathered over a period of 30 years from various members of the family. Before I started collection the history, I knew my grandparents and some of their descendants, but was entirely ignorant of my grandfathers and grandmothers brothers and sister and other remote kin. Most persons are just about as ignorant in these matters as I was. I began to question older members of the family about their ancestors and in this manner added to my knowledge of the family. I would get leads from these relatives which would help me locate more relatives. Anyone who has never written a genealogy will have no idea of the difficulties encounter in collection data and the vast amount of work entailed in the typewriting and mimeographing the material. Some relative refuse to give any information about themselves and members of their family. Other relatives ignore all letters they receive and let you keep on writing to them repeatedly. If it weren't for a number of cooperative relatives who supply information necessary, this genealogy would never be possible. Hundreds of letters have been written collecting the data needed. Hundreds more letters were written to notify every relative that this genealogy is available to them. The compilers have spent a great deal of time in getting this genealogy prepared as all the work, typewriting, mimeographing etc was done by them. Errors and omissions are sure to be found for which apologies are made. Any material which might be embarrassing has been omitted. It will be impossible for the compilers to ever again make another edition of this genealogy. It is our hope that this genealogy will be a stimulus to other relatives to carry on the work of issuing new editions in the future. Some data was received to late to be included in this genealogy. The compilers thank everyone for their help and cooperation. A family history is an ever changing series of events; old faces will be seen no more, new baby faces appear, young folks are getting married; and many folks are moving and changing addresses. Try to keep your family records up to date by keeping blank pages in this book and whenever any changes occur, be sure to mark them down, at once. I think every member of our family ought to be interested in preserving our records and keeping out family history up to date. In order to do this effectively, a committee ought to be formed by the interested members and the committee would secure new family data from the relatives from time to time. The committee could be changed from time to time as necessity arose. Such a committee would not only attend to the collection of family records, but could arrange family reunions, etc. Family reunions are interesting and beneficial. They help to get us acquainted and help to maintain our interests in other relatives. Our family is such a large on that one large family reunion is not practical. It would be better to have smaller family reunions of different branches of the family where any member would be welcome to attend. This family history is out of date by the time it reaches you and it ought to be rewritten in a few years. Who is going to volunteer to do it? Our large family is made up of many different kinds of people who sprang from a common ancestor; some are more conformable in the worlds goods then others, some are poor, some are more respectable than others, some may be considered no good, but please remember our present circumstances my not be entirely our own fault. Underneath the hardest shell may be found the finest kernel. Let us overlook the faults in others and try to correct our own. Many Laughlin's live in Western Pennsylvania and Ohio and the village of Laughlintown, Pennsylvania was founded by a Laughlin in General Washington's Army, when he went out to try to capture Western Pennsylvania from the French. The firm of Jones and Laughlin is a large steel producer in Pittsburgh. A Laughlin Family settled in Fitzroy Township never Kinburn, Ontario in 1833 and they have written a genealogy. The descendants of David and Elizabeth Laughlin hold and annual family reunions and Hazel Simmonds, 42 Donnis Avenue, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada are the Secretary of the family. (Written in 1954) Some the of essays of Dr. Laughlin that he included in his book: Our ancestors were Protestants, i. e. Presbyterian and other faiths. The present generation has member of all Protestant denominations as well as Roman Catholic. Be tolerant of other people's ideas, faith, etc. Is your religion the best one or the only true one? Religion is merely the belief in a supreme being or the worship of that being. When did religion begin? No one can say. No doubt the earliest humans had some form of religion. There have been thousands of religion and there are almost as many religions as there are different people. Each person has somewhat different ideas. Is Christianity the only true religion? Most certainly not. Was the bible written at Gods command and is it the word of God? Not any more than any other book. It was written by people like you and I and expresses the ideas of the Jewish people. Did God start any religion? No he did not. All religions are expressions of mans idea of God, life and the yearning for perpetual life. May has wondered why he was put here on earth for such a short time and then dies. Some persons thought out the idea of heave and hell and life after death, but there is no evidence of such things. Just the opposite is present in the Jewish writing which have been dug up accidentally in Palestine and put together in book form. Most religions are mystical, mysterious, and mournful as well as considered sacred. You will be damned to eternal punishment if you do not believe. Some religions are so rigid and intolerant they would permit no other beliefs if they had the power to suppress. We scoff other religions who believe in evil spirits which bring disease, death, etc, yet we believe we become spirits after death. We believe in angles (good spirits) and the devil (evil spirit). One looks in wonderment at the universe; the sun, the stars, the moon and thousands of planets, both seen and unseen. Our little minds cannot grasp the meaning of space and time which are immeasurable. We marvel at the perfect of life; of the way in which a little seed grows into a large animal, tree or human being. We wonder how all these things came into being. We wonder who or what made all these things. There is such vastness and magnitude; such complexity and perfection; we know the creator of it all mush be wonderful. We can wonder as much as we like but we still don't know anything about the Creator (God) after all these eons the world has been in existence. And we are not going to learn anything about God if we believe God "Always was" and that the description of the creation as written in the bible. To say that "God is love" is no explanation at all. We ought to be sensible enough to admit we know nothing about God. God shows his handiwork in natural life here on earth. He works in natural laws and not mysterious or supernatural ways. The Christians believe that Christ was the son of God. The rest of the world does not believe that. We are all the "sons of God" in one sense but not in any way connected to Deity. As all religions are the beliefs of man only and not of God, then every person has just as much opportunity of an everlasting life as the Christians. It is remarkable so much has been written about god and yet nothing is known about him. We ought to try to learn More about the Creator and the universe. If the Creator does not want us to learn about him, I know he has the way to prevent it. This not on religion is not meant to try to stop religion. There are some ideas about religion which could be improved, but fundamentally it is helpful to people. We ought to think for ourselves and not accept the views of people who lived thousands or hundreds of years ago. There are many people whose views do not coincide with any established religious faith. This is added by Sandi Sullivan People also should stop blaming their behavior on God. If you do something wrong. . . . I am a Christian or any other religious faith, is not a reason or an excuse for bad behavior. God is the only one that can do something in his name. You are the only person that can do something in your name. Take the blame for your bad behavior, I am sure "God" wants nothing to do with your act, you answer for that, not him. If you believe in the bible, then how can you judge? How can you hate? You can't, it is as simple as that.

Notes for Dr. Mary Elizabeth Bowyer:

Kevin McAuliffe [mailto:kmcauliffe( at )sympatico. ca] Sent: Tuesday, March 28, 2006 6:50: PM To: Sandi( at )SandiSullivan. com Subject: Genealogy Hi Sandi, I found your site on ancestry. com I see you have a copy of the Laughlin genealogy written by Dr. E. Ross Laughlin. I knew him quite well. Although he was a well educated man, he was a very simple and down to earth person. I also have some genealogy material, but it is on the Cook, Cooper and Wilson families that were related to his wife's family. His wife was Mary Elizabeth Bowyer. She was also a doctor. She contributed a lot towards the development of the hearing aid. She contracted Scarlet Fever from a patient and ended up deaf in her right ear. She wore a large, clunky, heavy battery strapped around her leg. This resulted in her developing a curved spine. Anyway, Mary Bowyer was my great-aunt (she was my grandfather Wilson Bowyer's sister). Have you been in contact with Bradley Fritzges (Ross and Mary's grandson)? He's into genealogy as well. Regards, Kevin McAuliffe Hi Sandi, I have a few photo's which I will forward on to you and I'll pass along the contact information for Brad to you as well. I believe he has the original material from his grandfather. All of the work Ross did was based on interviews, letters and running newspaper ads seeking out individuals. Ross was born in Marlbank which is the county of Lennox-Addington. From Napanee, go north on highway 41 to Beaver Lake. At Beaver Lake turn left and follow the road for about 6 km. Mary was born in Strathcona also in the county of Lennox-Addington. It is located just outside Newburgh, northeast of Napanee. Ross graduated from the UofT around 1920 and Mary graduated from the UofT around 1922. They moved to Minnesota (Mary had problems getting a job in Ontario, none of the hospitals would hire a woman doctor). Women's College Hospital was founded by a group of women doctors who had been refused work in the Toronto area hospitals. I believe one of Ross' sisters is a founding doctor of Women's College. Ross and Mary retired to Catasaqua Pa., a town outside Allentown, about an hour north of Philadelphia. They had an apartment on their daughter's property. They would stay there for the winter, and from May to October, they would stay in a house they owned beside the Salmon River in a village called Tamworth. They owned a cottage on a small lake near Beaver Lake. They bought swamp land from the Hunt family in Marlbank, brought in landfill, and Mary's father built the cottage for them in 1932. On the property next to the cottage is an old pioneer home which was renovated and rebuilt in the 1960's. Doug Laughlin lives in this home. Ross died on October 23, 1969 and is buried at the Fairview Cemetery in Whitehall, Pa. Mary died on April 11, 1986 and is buried in the same cemetery. Anyway, I will be in touch shortly. Regards, Kevin

Notes for John Henry Trivett:

John Henry Trivett lived in Christopher Lake after he left his wife and 6 children in Ontario, Canada. Christopher Lake had a population of 50 or 60; it is North of Prince Albert, very close to Prince Albert National Park. The village was on either side of the highway, which was the only street. John had a one-room building with a bed in one corner and a small cook stove in the other, a table and 2 chairs were there as well. The walls were plain, I don't remember if there were wallboards on the inside or not. There were cupboards over the table. An outdoor toilet out back and a washstand with no running water. I remember if smelled like cooking and stale tobacco. It had a single slopping roof and one window in the west. When I would be about 6 or 7 in the mid 1940's, I remember my first recollection of John Henry, he came to the farm (we were living on the farm at that time) in his old had painted blue Ford convertible coup with a rumble sear in the back. It was almost worn out and had no power at all even thou it was a V8. I thought at the time that this was the best car I had ever seen or ridden in. John Henry would come in the fall and would lend a hand at harvest were he could for he was a bit lazy and at this time he would be up in years. He would stay for 3 to 5 weeks. When harvest was done then my dad would go hunting ducks and if it was a Saturday I could go along. John Henry would only shoot when it was a sure shot and there was not too much of a chance of him missing. He did not have too much money at this time in his life and shells cost money. I remember Dad giving him the what for one time for not shooting and John Henry saying he didn't see the duck. He was not too tall, big around the middle and a bit over weight. He always called me "Deary". He had a large sore behind the ear called I think mastoids. It was like an open growth. He was a smoker but not a heavy smoker and he used roll your owns. Each year he would come down and visit us in the fall on the farm. This went on till 1949 when we moved to the town of Assiniboia and Dad (Elmer R. Dennison) farmed from there. Then John Henry would come to stay with us there in Assiniboia in the fall. This would be one of the last times he came to see us maybe 1952-53. He was getting old and poor of health in fact in his latter years he had a leg amputated because of gangrene. The community took him under their wing and took care of him for now he was in a wheel chair. When John Henry passed away my Dad was already dead and Mom (Hazel Agnes Trivett) was living alone. She wanted so badly to go to her brother's funeral in Christopher Lake but everyone was working at the time. I was teaching in Regina and was unable to get away. I remember her being so mad. Mom was a bit of a social climber and was not always proud of her relatives. She use to get a bit gruff with John Henry when she figured he had stayed long enough. Of course there was always the extra work that went with having another person stay at your house and it was always in thrashing time. Lorne Dennison liked John Henry and he would in the late 1950's and early 60's go to Prince Albert National Park with his family for a holiday in the summer. He would always call in on John Henry and have a visit and invite him to their rented cabin in the park. They would have great times together. On occasion Mom and Dad would go up there and do the same. John Henry would sometimes come down in the 1920's to help whit harvest on my Dad's farm. He would join the threshing crew of 8 to 12 men and would go around the countryside harvesting crops. Uncle left Ontario, Canada for the west and lived but a short time Grandpa and Grandma Trivett. He then moved up North to Christopher Lake where he lived with the Indians. I don't think he did too much hunting and trapping but worked in the Village doing odd jobs for various people. John Henry left his wife and six children and came west because of some extra marital relationship that he got into at that time. Lorne says that John Henry sure loved the women. Written by Jerry Dennison, 2002 Jerry Dennison says that John was a friend of Archibald Stansfeld Belaney aka Grey Owl. This would make sense as they lived in the same area at the same time period. There is a small marker of the type that funeral homes use with his name and 1778-1968 on it. The Cemetery record says that he died 17 July 1968. Christopher Lake is a small community and I have been told that some people may remember him, but as yet have found no one. If I do, I will let you know. Sincerely, Leverne Baxter

Notes for Lester Hugh McKay:

When Lester McKay died he did not have a will and his brother walked in and took everything including the house. His wife was left with only old age pension to live on. Since women had no rights back in the early 1950 and 60's this easily happened. It looks like they never married as Luella couldn't get a divorce from John Henry. Since there was no common law rights, she didn't have a chance. They lived as husband and wife, she used his last name and are buried together.

From: Susan Hall [mailto:hall_sm at hotmail. com] Sent: December 9, 2002 10:35 PM To: Sandi Sullivan Subject: RE: Hi Sandi, Thanks for the info. FYI Harry Mountenay took the a out of his name and became Mounteny. If I understood correctly it was because one of his sisters-in-law was a kleptomaniac and he didn't want to be known as a relative. He married Dorothy Mae Taylor who is still alive. They had four children, the oldest of whom is my father. I will see my Dad later this week and get you some more data. Are you collecting current generation info or just back generation? Also, where do you fit in? How are related? Thanks again, Susan
