10. Peter4 Davy (Thomas3, Thomas2, Thomas1)2 was born 31 May 1724 in Schenectady, New York, USA, and died 09 Jul 1790 in Bath, Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada. He married Anna Maria Saltsman, daughter of George Saltsman and Margaret. She was born 03 Nov 1718 in Palatine, Montgomery, New York, USA2, and died Aft. 1795.
Notes for Peter Davy: New York Births and Baptisms, Schoharie and Mohawk Valleys, 1694-1906, Baptismal Date: 31 May 1724 Father: Thomas Davy Mother: Catrin Klein Item Number: 668 Child: Pieter Sponsor: Pieter Hoogwater; Baafie Klein There is still a branch of the Davy family there, but the two, which took opposite sides in the American Revolution, cannot be definitely connected. They share some common family stories, including that of a Davy 'fortune' sitting in a bank in England. The Davy file in the Lennox and Addington Museum in Napanee contains family histories based on oral traditions, with many exciting episodes from the French and Indian and Revolutionary wars. However, it is difficult to place these stories in precise historical and geographical contexts. According to Bill Barker (Herkimer County historian) Peter was in Lt. Dygert's 1757 militia, next to Balt. Dillenbach and John Hecki. The family belonged to the Stone Arabia Lutheran Church in 1770. On 6 Feb 1781 Dr. Wm Petry treated three of Peter Davis' daughters who had been wounded by Tory Indian raiders. The 1769 SAL church record has birth dates for Catherine as 1749 (SAL footnote corrects to 1759), Margaret as 1760 (Barker amends to 1761 to avoid overlap with Thomas) and Maria as 1763. Peter drew 500 acres for himself and his family consisting of a wife and seven children and by 1790 had made a good improvement on the land. He therefore requested an additional 200 acres in the 8th, but was refused. The Land Board reported that “he appears to have tilled and improved a Lot drawn by his son in conjunction with him and the son having already applied and obtained the Bounty, the Board do not think proper to comply with the present application” [30, pg 165]. Note that he was not included in the muster roll of disbanded soldiers settled in Ernestown 7 Oct 1784 [18], Deeds for his 500 acres were issued by the Crown on 10 August 1801 [15], [23]. Possibly buried by Rev. John Langhorn in Bath, Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada,7 September 1790. Russ McGillivray [russmcgillivray(at)hotmail. com] BTW, where in Langhorn's register is the burial of Peter Davy in 1790? I don't see it in the published transcription (or Bill Martin's copy on the Web). Carol Davy (of Odessa - I assume you have met her too) also believes this burial is in the register. I think there is circumstantial evidence that Peter lived somewhat longer. I was thinking of the fact that Peter's children's UE petitions did not refer to him as deceased before 1802 when his lots were transferred to John. LAND: UCLP D/Misc DA-DEY 23. Notes for Peter Davy: Record of German Flats Reformed Church (1763-1795, 1811-1848, 1896-1899) Peter's baptism is not found in the records of Stone Arabia churches. Bill Barker suggests he was born about 1758. In 1785 Peter sponsored the baptism of Elisabeth, daughter of Conrad Eigenauer and Anna Spohn. On 1790 Herkimer census (1-1-5) near Nicholas Spohn. (ref. Bill Barker) Peter Davy, widower, married Maria Hiller at the Dutch Reformed church, German Flats. Peter Davy was the grandfather of the Davy family historian, Henry Sidney Davy. He says that Peter had 18 children by two wives, Betsy Spohn and Eliza Hillier. H. S. Davy says that Peter did not draw land as a UEL because he remained in the United States a few months over the allotted time, on account of his trying to hold possession of the old Davy homestead there with his father who was then a very old man. (The homestead was taken away by the US government anyway. ) H. S. Davy says that Peter bought and settled on Lot 36, Con 4, Ernestown in 1806 (originally a clergy reserve), but the lot was finally purchased from the Crown by his son John P. Davy on 23 Apr 1856. Prior to that it had been rented by the family.

She was born 12 Feb 1769 in Palantine, Montgomery, New York, USA10, and died about 1840.
Notes for John Davy: When the American Revolutionary War broke out his sympathies were with the Mother Country so he joined the British Forces and fought with them. When the war was ended the Loyalist had their lands confiscated and were treated as traitors. John was married before he emigrated to Upper Canada. He and his first wife came to Québec, Canada once or twice and apparently returned to New York, USA for some unknown reason. When he emigrated to Upper Canada in the 1780's he was a widower with two daughters, Eve and Catherine. He emigrated to Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada, Upper Canada and given Crown land by drawing lots. He was married on Nov 22, 1787 to Sophy Hoffnel. At the time of marriage he was described as a widower living on the 1st Concession Adolphustown in the 4th Township of Cataraque. He was married in the presence of Hannah Davy. Sophy Hoffnagel was living on the 4th Concession, Cataraqui Township at the time of marriage. Their marriage was the first by Rev. John Langhorn, Anglican Clergy in that district. John received a grant of land from British Government near Bath, Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada. John Davy was a soldier in the Royal Regiment of New York. He was on the provisional list of the Land Board of Mecklenberg, Upper Canada in 1786, so he emigrated to Upper Canada before that time. John and Sophy witnessed the marriages of: Daniel Morden and Elizabeth Lawson, 24 Dec 1788 John Smith and Sarah Fisher, 23 Dec 1800 A Cemetery transcription says that John Davy died 30 May 1808 age 59 years. They lived in Belleville, Hastings, Ontario, Canada and owned the first brick house in Belleville, which was then called by another name. When Capt. Myers died the widow did not receive all his property. She was willed a farm on the 3rd Concession Sidny Township about 9 miles from Belleville. John Davy made a will dated May 17,1808 and mentioned all his children in the will. They total 13. When John died he had willed east half of Lot 10 Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada to his son Peter Davy. He willed the West half of Lot 10 to his son John including his gristmill. He willed his son Benjamin 100 acres in Camden Township. He willed his son George 100 acres on the 6th Concession of Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada. He willed his wife and daughters, Eve, Margaret, Sophia and Elizabeth an equal share of his goods and chattels. In his will he did not say he had a son William and did not mention that he expected another child, but it is claimed he had a son William born after his death.

Notes for Sophy Hoffnel: When John died Sophy married Capt. John Walden Myers who was a rich man. They were married by a minister who did not belong to the State English Church so the marriage was not recognized as legal by the government. When John Myers died she was not able to get her share of the property of her husband. It was reported by Dr. E. Ross Laughlin that when Myers died she was willed a farm on the 3rd Concession, Sidney, near Belleville, but donated it to her daughter Sophia who married John Billings

His first wife died before he came to Upper Canada, He had two daughters Eve and Catherine by his first wife and he brought them to Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada, with him. She was not mentioned in her father's will. Perhaps she was dead before he made his will in 1808 or she may have married against his wishes incurring his anger. 24. Elizabeth5 Davy (Peter4, Thomas3, Thomas2, Thomas1)11 was born 13 Oct 1765 in Schenectady, New York, USA. She married Frederick Baker11.
Notes for Elizabeth Davy: Christening Sponsors: Maria Elizabeth & Henrich Saltzmann Elizabeth (Davy) married Frederick Baker between 1784 and 1788. The date and place is unknown. Their son Henry, however, was baptized at Bath, Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada, in April 1789. The Davy's are well known Loyalist families. Memorial windows in loving memory of several of their family are to be found in St. John's Anglican Church at Bath, Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada. One of the Davy's lived in Herkimer, New York Elizabeth was a devoted wife and mother of a large family. The will of her husband, who predeceased her, indicates the esteem in which she was held. The date of her death and place of burial are unknown. Burial was likely in the old Lutheran Cemetery, north of Ernestown or at St. John's, Bath. This is a matter for further research. Elizabeth successfully petitioned for land at Kingston on 16 June 1790 [10]: The Memorial of Elizabeth Baker alias Davy Daughter of Peter Davy, late a private in the 2nd Battn Humbly Sheweth That your Lordship's Memorialist Being Married [to] Frederick Baker claims the Portion of land under the order of Council 9th of November 1789 And Humbly prays that two hundred acres of land may be assigned to her, as the Daughter of a Loyalist in the 8th Township. When the Mecklenburgh District Land Board met on 16 June 1790 they granted her petition and awarded Elizabeth 200 acres [30, pg166]. However, there is no further record of Elizabeth receiving land. Elizabeth's petition was one of four submitted by the Davy's on the same day and in the same hand. The others were from Peter Davy, John Davy and John's wife Sophia (Huffnail) [16]. On 2 April 1827 Elizabeth tried for title to a modest 50 acres: The petition of Elizabeth Baker, wife to Frederick Baker of the Township of Ernest Town (a U. E. Loyalist) Farmer Humbly sheweth that your petitioner is the daughter of Peter Davy late of Ernest Town, deceased, a U. E. Loyalist; that at the first settlement of this Province fifty acres being the North East quarter of Lot number twenty nine in the third Concession of the Township of Ernest Town was allotted to her as family land on account of her said father as by reference to the map of said township will appear; and your petitioner being desirous to obtain a patent therefor from the Crown, prays that your Excellency will cause the same to be made out to her and permit Andrew Mercer of the Town of York to be her agent to take out the same when completed. The petition was signed with 'her mark' and witnessed by Abraham Amey at Ernestown [13]. There is no indication that this second petition met with success and indeed, in the 20 Jan 1790 report of John Collins of the Surveyor General's office all 200 acres of Lot 29 Con 3 was in the name of Lewis Hicks [14]. The deeds from the Crown were only issued in 1845 and then it was to Isaac Asselstine (150 ac. ) and Joseph Chatterson (50 ac. ) [15]. In 1844, writing about the settlers on the Bath Road, John Collins Clark said: Mr. Frederick Baker settled on the farm next above Mr. [Jacob] Miller. His wife was a Davy. He died many years ago. His widow is still living with her son George, who owns the old farm. [7] Her death is probably recorded in the John C. Clark diary [2] which notes on 28 June 1848 that: Old Mrs. Baker, relict of the late Frederick Baker, died at night. The sponsors at the baptism of Elizabeth Davis were Maria Elizabeth and Henrich Saltzmann. Elizabeth was a sponsor of her nephew George Davy's baptism (son of Peter) in 1783. On 16 June 1790, Elizabeth identified herself as being married to Frederick Baker and petitioned for 200 acres in Sidney Township as the daughter of a loyalist, namely Peter Davy, a private in the 2nd Battalion. Her petition was granted, but she was never given the land. In 1827 she tried to get a patent for 50 acres being the north-east quarter of Lot 29, Con 3 of Ernestown which had been allotted to her at the first settlement of the province as the daughter of Peter Davy, a Loyalist. Again, she apparently was not successful. LAND: UCLP 1788-1832, B Misc/19 (1790). Ontario Archives reel C-1634. UCLP 1793-1840, B Misc/162 (1827). Ontario Archives reel C-1636. DEATH: J. C. Her daughter Elizabeth Baker, born about 1793, married my ancestor, Jospeh Amey in Ernestown Township in 1814. Do you have any information that would show a connection to your family? Thank you! respectfully Deborah Amey Anderson Utah Oh your web site is amazing!!!! I just found dozens of my ancestors and relatives in the documents! And the personal details and degree of documentation is astounding! I grew up with the Davy's, and Aseltines, and Amey's all around me. Elizabeth Davy, born Oct. 13, 1765 had two daughters, Elizabeth Baker and Catherine Baker who married my many times great grandfather, Joseph. Two of her other children married unrelated children of Jospeh! Thank you so very much!!!!!! I'm so excited to have found this. I've passed your web site address along to a cousin, Russ McGilvary, who has spent many years researching the various related families.
64 iv. Catherine Baker. She married Jospeh Amey
25. U. E. L. Henrich5 Davy (Peter4, Thomas3, Thomas2, Thomas1)12 was born 06 Mar 1768 in Schenectady, New York, USA, and died 15 Aug 1832 in Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada. He married Mary. She was born about 1742.
Notes for U. E. L. Henrich Davy: Christening Sponsors: Henrich Dillenbach & wife Barbara (Schultz) Henry witnessed the baptism of his niece Susanna Davy (daughter of Peter). There is confusion in some histories between Henry Davy and Henry Davis, UE who settled in Adolphustown. The latter was married to Mary Hoffnail, sister of Sophia who was married to John Davy. The muster roll for Ernestown, 7 Oct 1784, lists Henry Davye, single, gone into the States for seed wheat. On 7 Oct 1789, Henry Davis (sic), soldier in the late 2nd Battalion of Royal Yorkers, petitioned the Land Board of Mecklenberg, Upper Canada as follows, "Henry Davey, United Empire Loyalist humbly prays for lands for his wife and one child born before the year 1789. " By order of Mr. President Russell in Council Nov. 17, 1897, he was granted 100 acres in Burford Township Oxford County) in addition to the first allowance which he had received. This was granted by the Mecklenburgh Land Board and Henry Davy received Lot 36, Con 1 of Camden (which noted that he had received 100 acres in Ernestown). According to John Collins' report of 1790, Henry Davy had 100 acres of Lot 10, Con 1 of Ernestown (John Davy had the other half) and 200 acres of Lot 36, Con 1 of Camden. These remain the same in lists from 1798 and 1800. On 6 October 1798, Henry sold the Camden lot to Gideon Shurtliff. John Davy swore an oath before a J. P. on 4th Oct 1797 that Henry was married and came to this province with his wife and one child before 1789. On 29 Oct 1797 Henry petitioned for land for his wife and child born before 1789. He was recommended for 100 acres as family lands. He received half of Lot 22, Con 2, Ernestown from the Crown on 31 Dec 1798. He sold the property to Isaac Fraser on 28 Feb 1816. Henry was a Captain of the Addington Militia in the War of 1812. An extract from "Officers of the British Forces in Canada During the War of 1812-1815 by H. L. Irving, 1908 "Militia officers doing duty at Kingston under Colonel, the Honourable Richard Cartwright (Lieutenant Henry Davey, 1st Reg't of Addington Militia; - Adjutant Henry Davey}. Also in this same book is the notation "Captain McIntosh and Captain Davey of the Incorporated Militia are appointed each to command a gun-boat, Militia Order, Kingston, 8 June 1812. It is also noted that during the War of 1812 Henry Davey of Ernestown served as Lieutenant in the first Flank Company of the Addington Regiment of Militia then commanded by Col William Johnston between 29 June and 31 December 1812 (NA RG 9 Series I-B-4, Vol 19 pp 1222-3). The certificate of service was signed on 10 Dec 1820. In 1817 Henry petitioned for Lot 31, Con 3 of Ernestown on behalf of his son George. In it, he said that he had joined the 2nd Battalion, KRRNY in 1780 and served 4 years. On 1 Apr 1820, members of the militia petitioned for land in Addington County where they could all settle. He was still a Captain in the 1828-1829 militia return. LAND: UCLP D/Misc DA-DEY 16. Notes for Mary Davy: She petitioned for Crown lands in 1817 (April 23 1817) at which time she said she had attained the age of 21 years and is the daughter of Henry Davey United Empire Loyalist who retained his loyalty during the late war without suspicions of aiding or assisting the enemy and did his duty in defense of the Province during the late war. Andrew Mercer of the Town of York was her agent to locate her land and take out the deed. Her petition was granted June 3, 1817. Nothing known about her children and descendents if any.
26. Anna P.5 Davy (Peter4, Thomas3, Thomas2, Thomas1)12 was born 02 Jul 1769 in Schenectady, New York, USA. She married (1) Cornelius Brass 31 Aug 1790 in Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada. She married (2) Isaac Asselstine 1801. He was born about 1770.
Notes for Anna P. Davy: Hannah witnessed three marriages performed by John Langhorn: John Davy and Sophy Hoffnal, 22 Nov 1787 John Caldwell and Juliana Miller, 11 Mar 1788 William Ashley and Margaret Buck, 6 Jul 1788. Hannah and Cornelius were married by Rev. John Langhorn. The witnesses were Thomas Davy, Russell Hawley, John Caldwell and Henry Davy. Hannah Brass, alias Davy, daughter of Peter Davy late private in the 2nd Battalion Royal Yorkers, and married to Cornelius Brass, petitioned for 200 acres which was granted on 10 March 1791. There is no evidence that the land was received. On 19 October 1801 Hannah Davy now Asselstine, daughter of Peter Davy of Ernestown petitioned for 200 acres and swore on the Bible that she had never received any land from the Crown. However, the first Hannah signed her petition 'Hannah Brass alias Davie' while the second signed with her mark. Hannah Asselstine swore on the Holy Evangelist before a J. P. that she never received lands from the Crown. This could show (1) that she could not be Hannah Brass on the basis of the first petition; or (2) she was known to have filed an earlier petition as Hannah Brass but never received the lands she was allotted 10 years earlier. He married Elizabeth Friermouth about 1793 in Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada, daughter of John Freymouth and Esther Weeks. She was born Bef. 1775 in New York, USA, and died Unknown in Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada14.
Notes for U. E. L. Michael Davey: Michael Davy son of Peter was born in what is now Little Falls New York. When he was baptized at Trinity Lutheran church, Stone Arabia, his sponsors were Bernard Kaiser and Barbara Emg Arrived in Upper Canada in 1784 but drew no land. Not listed in the muster roll of disbanded soldiers settled in Ernestown, 7 Oct 1784. Did not claim any military service or status as a Loyalist and married about 1793 to Elizabeth, daughter of John Adam Freymouth, a U. E. Loyalist He and his brothers served in the British army during the War of the American Independence. After the war was over the Loyalists who were in the American Colonies were treated very harshly and their lands were confiscated. Michael and his brothers immigrated to Upper Canada. Apparently he arrived in Upper Canada in 1784. Records from the Public Archives give the following data - "Michael Davey, Ernestown, and states residence since 1784 (In Canada). His petition for land is as follows". "Michael Davey having resided in this province since the year 1784 and having drawn no lands prays for an assignment for himself and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of John Adam Freymouth, United Empire Loyalist, 4 Oct. 1798. He was granted lot 32 2nd Concession Pickering, Durham, Ontario, Canada, York County consisting of 200 acres. During the War of 1812 Michael Davy of Ernestown volunteered into a Flank Company at the declaration of War in 1812, and served as a Private at the post of Kingston under the command of Capt Matthew Clark. (NA RG 9 Series I-B-4, Vol 19 pp 1226-8). The certificate of service was signed on 4 Nov 1839 when Michael was already deceased. From the military records in Ottawa is the following extract. "Michael Davey, 49th Regiment, discharged under provision general order 6th Dec. 1814. The first lands given to the United Empire Loyalist got additional lands by petitioning the Government for them. Each child of a Loyalist was also entitled to petition and receive lands. Lands received by petition were often sold and the Loyalist or his children may never have resided on such land grants. Michael Davy lived in Ernestown, Lennox Addington, Ontario, Canada. We do not know whom he married for a 2nd wife, if any. We do not know the dates of his and his wife's deaths.
