Marriage Notes for Samuel Burgess and Ann Robson:

She signed the register, he marked a cross by which someone else wrote his name i. e. he was illiterate. Sometimes the clergy assumed the dialect speaking working people could not sign their name and said "put your mark here" and they did. As with early 19th century registers there isn't much info - no parents names, occupations. It's from the microfilm of the original marriage register. Poor quality is due to the register fading over the years. Also when the library made the film (probably in the 1960's or 70's) the page wasn't flat - the right-side is in focus, the left isn't. In case you can't see what it says, it reads - Samuel Burgess of this Parish and Ann Robson of this Parish were married in this Church by Banns with consent of [ blank space ] this twentieth day of Mar in the year One thousand and eight hundred and thirty three By me William Johnson M. A. Vicar This marriage was solemnized between us { The mark T. Samuel Burgess Ann Robson} In the pesence of { Michael LINDLEY John MARSLAND [ regular witness, parish clerk?]} Copy in Family Binder

J. Burgess, Old resident of Todmorden was buried on Saturday The funeral of John J. Burgess, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. Mr. Burgess, who was born in England, came to Canada when a young man, settling in old Todmorden long before it had any thought of ever becoming a part of the city, and when everybody out there spoke of their home as being "over the Dan. " For many years he carried on business as a wagaonmaker and carpenter, and was a successful business man. Mr. Burgess was a widower, and leaves a large number of descendants in different parts of the province. William Burgess, the oldest son, is superintendent of the Don Valley Brick Works, and has been for years a member of the Todmorden

        38. William7 Burgess (John James6, Samuel5, Arthur4, William3, Arthur2, William1)151 was born 04 Jul 1869 in Todmorden, East York, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada152, and died 26 May 1944 in 30 North Logan AV, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada152. He married (1) Alice Gill Vile152,153 1890, daughter of Richard Vile and Mary Collins. She was born 07 May 1872 in York, Ontario, Canada154, and died 02 Jan 1908 in Todmorden, East York, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada155. He married (2) Francis V. Chard156 26 Jun 1918 in 25 Convell AV, Todmorden, East York, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada157, daughter of Arthur Chard and Henrietta I.. She was born 26 Mar 1869 in Australia158, and died Dec 1929 in Ontario, Canada159.

Notes for William Burgess:

In 1898, William began the work that would thrust him into the spotlight of early Todmorden. He assumed the position of School Trustee - a position he retained until 1938 - when illness prompted his resignation. While he was working for the Board, he served a Chairman and Secretary - Treasurer. The latter responsibility was the one to which he was elected most frequently. Although he resigned from the position in January of 1932, he continued officially as Trustee until 1938. The other parts of William Burgess' life were equally as important to him. His first wife, Alice G. Vile, gave birth to three boys, William, Richard and Clarence. Their mother passed away in 1908, about eighteen years after her marriage to William. William's second wife, Francis Chard, was with him throughout most of his tenure as a Trustee, during his years in Todmorden, William Burgess was Superintendent of the Don Valley Brickworks, located just southwest of Todmorden Mills. His Victorian home at 30 North Logan Avenue has not suffered the inevitable fate of many older homes in the area. It still stands at 1148 Logan Avenue, just north of Cosburn Avenue, on the west side. It sits alone, in stark contrast to the two apartment buildings on either side of it. (As of 1994) William Burgess should be remembered as a man who contributed so much to education in the early years of his community. He was an integral part of the planning team that was responsible for the birth of William Burgess School. His name has been so aptly given to the former Torrens Avenue School by 1924, and it is currently displayed on the south wall of the west wing of his school and on the south wall of the Todmorden Legion. His forty years consecutive years of service as School Trustee (1989-1938) is an achievement unmated to this date.

Children of Sarah Burgess and John Latham are:

76               i.    Verna Marjory8 Latham252, born 27 Nov 1904 in Todmorden, East York, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada

Notes for Verna Marjory Latham:

Arlene and Audrey you asked me to write down what I remembered about My Father your Grandfather - who was killed at age 28. (Letter was written about 1980) We four children had no bed of roses, and sometimes when I hear people talking of hard times - I would like to tell them, our sad story. I really wouldn't but I have no patience with people, but then again who cares? John William Latham born Nov. 5th 1880, only son of Bella (Cooper) Latham, she later married again, his name was Ashby. John Latham married Sarah Margaret Burgess eight child of John and Martha (Purchase) Burgess. Sarah Margaret's Mother died shortly after the birth of her ninth child, Mother and baby are buried together. John (Jack) Burgess were married in 1902 or 1903 and a daughter was born. In 1904 Verna, another daughter was born in 1906 named Audrey. Another daughter named Sarah was born in 1908. In 1909 Jack Latham was killed in a cave in at the Don Valley Brick Yard in Todmorden Ontario, just East of Toronto. He was 28 years age. His wife Sarah was left with 3 little girls, and she was 5 months pregnant with another child. Then baby was born April 13th 1910. There she was with 4 children and not a cent or anything to her name. Can you think of anything worse? What a hopeless' situation. The 3 little girls were shipped off to the Protestant orphans Home 344 Dovercourt Road, Toronto, and the baby boy stayed with his paternal Grandmother who by now had a very large family of her won. He was later taken to the home (at 2 years of age) John William. If a tragedy like this was to happen today, there would be a hue out cry but nobody really cared. Sarah's brother was head man at the Brickyard and if anyone could have helped her I guess it would have been him. He had a school named after him in Toronto, (it is till a school, The William Burgess School) I guess everyone had to look out for themselves. Poor dear Sarah. She went to work in the home of her uncle Johnnie Lennox, she worked for Uncle Johnnie his married daughter Lizzie, and her husband, and their children, also his crazy daughter Maggie (and I do mean crazy) at times she was quite violent (she had been kicked in the head by a horse at a young age. Sarah had to contend with all this and was paid $8 a mouth. In the meantime Sarah's children were in the home. It was alright, you got up in the morning by a bell ringing and did everything by bell, you always lined up in 2s and marched everywhere, no running, no dawdling, food was plain, lots of bread and watered milk, butter on bread on Sunday, stewed fruit, prunes apricots apples figs, no one was really hungry. Verna who was 6 years old when her Father was killed remembers him, he used to lie on the floor with her sitting and bouncing and he would sing. Shall there be any stars in my crown. She also remembers the day he was killed, his dog Fido a Dalmatian came home, shortly after the dog came home the Doctor drove up in his horse and buggy and came into the house to tell Sarah that Jack had been killed. She fell to the floor and seemed to be surrounded by a mist which seemed to come from her body. It was as if all the good came out of her and her unborn child, and in later years when Jack Jr. suffered so and had so many operations and had his leg amputated and died at 39, Verna always remembered the day her Mother collapsed with Jack inside of her and thought he had been doomed then, and she thought there was a curse on the Latham men.

Notes for Royce Howard Sullivan:

Thank you for coming today, I will try to get through this as best I can. My Dad was a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, Veteran, a 2 time hole-in-one scratch golfer, and many other things. I will start off with a story my Uncle Alf told me…. a few times in fact. Dad’s family lived on Coxwell Ave in Toronto and from what I can gather the house was always full. Dad had 3 brothers and 3 sisters spanning a 20 year age difference. One day my Nana sent my Uncle Alf to get my Dad…. Don’t know what he did, but it seemed to me that my Uncle Alf was always glad to get him. As my uncle was chasing him down Coxwell Ave to get his hands around his neck, my Dad slipped on the side walk and fell. When my Dad was scrambling to get to his feet he was also grabbing his comb out of his back pocket and started to run and comb his hair at the same time. I can just see my Uncle Alf’s face as my Dad ran away with good hair. My uncle couldn’t kill him that day as he couldn’t stop laughing. Dad’s hair saved the day. My Dad could run but he could not climb. When my brother Steve was about 10 years old he climbed a tree at the mini bike trails at Don Mills and the 401. Once Steve climbed out to a branch over the Don River he froze and couldn’t move. I think my brother Guy ran home and got my Dad. Dad ran over and climbed the tree to get Steve out but as he climbed to the same branch over the River Dad froze. We had to call the fire department to get both of them down. The next day I remember that my Dad wasn’t too happy on hearing the radio announcing every hour on the hour that the Manager of Park Manor Motors was “up and tree again” My Dad (Sully to everyone) was a very social man with many friends. He had a gang of them, Mike Harrington, Harold Shoniker, Dick Duff (Duffy) Dan O’Leary, Dan Morrissey, Glene Whitbread, Pete Tucker, Jerry and Waldo Vince, Mel Taylor and, The big Kahuna (don’t know if I ever knew what Kahuna’s real name was). And many more… the best way to describe them that I can think of is that they were the Rat Pack (the dirty dozen) with Golf Clubs instead of microphones. When my father went into business for himself with a partner Jimmy Izard, they started a used car dealership by the name of Compact Cars. Every year they would have a golf tournament at Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club where they were members. Every year my Dad would give away a used car for closest to the hole and every year I would sit on the ninth hole with a tape measure. And every year and every time I had to measure the closest to hole of one of his friends they would try to bribe me. Every one of them. Was it a test??? I remember they always had a 20 dollar bill in their hands as they walked up to see what the tape measure said. I always turned it down…. What they didn’t know was that the person who won the car every year always gave me a $50!!!!!! They were a funny bunch to say the least. My Dad had a few talents, one of which (I wish I had) was being an expert at crosswords puzzles, he was a Master. He always had a crossword on the go… One day in 1997, I was at work…. Dan was taking one of his few breaks and doing a crossword. Dan got stuck on a word and for the life of me I don’t know why Dan would ask me… I can’t spell… he knows that. But he did ask… I can’t remember what the word was, but it was a 9 letter word for something…. I laughed at the thought that he would ask me… but if there is one talent I do have… it is the ability of recognizing what talent various people have and knowing who to call … and even though my Dad was in the early stages of Alzheimer’s I called him…. I asked him the crossword puzzle question and he said. . . hmmmm I will think about it and call you back… 30 seconds later he called with the answer. I thanked him and went into Dan’s office. My Dad says that answer is “…” and he was right. I was so proud of him…. Remembering the little things in life get you through the big ones. Goodbye Dad. Notes for Mark Alexander Fyke:

Canadian tourist killed in Florida while on spring break Copyright © 1996 Nando. net Copyright © 1996 The Associated Press DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Mar 17, 1996 5:45 p. m. EST) - Blood-soaked roses marked the spot Saturday where a Canadian student on spring break was fatally shot at a public telephone while talking to his mother. "We had partied with him. We never thought it was possible for something like this to happen," said Roberta Stavreva, staring at the roses that had absorbed the blood from the sand surrounding the pay phone. Mark A. Fyke, 19, became the second foreign tourist to die in Florida in less than a month when he was shot in the back of the head Friday night. "I just heard some voices in the background," Fyke's mother, Christine Fyke, told The Canadian Press in an interview Saturday. "I thought someone wanted to use the phone. He said, 'I've got to get going Mom. I'll see you later. ' "and that was it. " She said she didn't hear a shot. Police said they were looking for a teen-ager who broke away from a small group of youths on the beach and tried to rob Fyke. The shooter was believed to be 14 to 16 years old and from the area, said Joe Wooden, deputy chief of the Volusia County Beach Patrol. The two deaths recalled the spate of killings of foreigners in the early 1990s that left Florida's multi billion-dollar tourism industry struggling to protect its image. "I'm certain it will make people stop and evaluate what's going on, but I'm sure they will realize this is not a standard," Wooden said, adding, "Daytona Beach is no Miami. " A Dutch woman was killed in an attempted robbery Feb. 23 while her husband asked for directions at a Miami gas station. Daytona Beach, on the Atlantic coast northeast of Orlando, has been generally immune from violent crime and draws an estimated 300,000 young people this time of year, many from Canada. Fyke, a student from Belleville, Hastings, Ontario, Canada, was speaking on a phone at the entrance to a popular stretch of beach just before midnight. A friend, Che Guerrera, also of Canada, with him when he was shot. "I heard a shot and then his friend was pounding on the door screaming, 'Help me! Help me! Help me!"' said Ms Stavreva, 19, a student from Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada, who was wrapping up her final day of spring break Saturday. "We ran outside and there was blood everywhere. There was nothing I could do for him. " The small black revolver used in the killing was on the sand beside Fyke's body, she said. "I won't be back," said Michelle Ward, also 19, from Hamilton. "I used that phone all the time, sometimes at 2 in the morning. " Motel phone surcharges made the pay phones popular with students, she said. Witnesses told police the teen-ager walked up to Fyke, asked for his wallet and shot him once in the back of the head, Wooden said. The shooter, described as a heavyset white male, then joined a group of teen-agers on the beach, who all ran away, Wooden said. A $5,000 reward was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer. Fyke's classmates, about 40 students from Nicholson Catholic high school, boarded their bus for home Saturday morning. "That was a sad bunch of kids," said Dennis Gummo, front desk manager at the Thunderbird Motel, where they stayed. Other students were checking in. "It kind of puts a damper on spring break to have someone blown away on your first day," said Jason King, 19, of Bayonne, N. J. FLORIDA: In Daytona Beach, a judge heeded the jury's recommendation and sentenced John Rainey to life in prison yesterday for the murder of Belleville teenager Mark Fyke. But that wasn't enough for the slain 18-year-old's father: Bill Fyke wanted Rainey sent to the electric chair. "I have not found a grain of sand that would keep John Rainey out of the electric chair," Fyke said, reading a statement after the brief sentencing hearing. "John Rainey should not be rewarded by life in prison for taking a life. He should pay with his own. " The jury that last month convicted the 19-year-old Florida native of murdering Mark Fyke during a spring break school trip had recommended against the death penalty. It would have been highly unusual for Judge McFerrin Smith tooverrule the jury and send Rainey to Florida's electric chair. And in a hushed courtroom, the judge sentenced him to life without parole for 1st-degree murder and also to 18 years for aggravated robbery, to be served concurrently. Defense lawyer Gary Tinsley said he would appeal the sentence. Christine Fyke, who attended the trial of her son's killer, told a Belleville radio station she was satisfied with the sentence. "I think in about 99% of the cases, the judge doesn't overrule the recommendation of the jury," she said. "I was certainly satisfied with that recommendation, knowing that a life sentence means life and there won't be any parole. " But Bill Fyke, who attended the sentencing, was adamant that his son's killer should have been sentenced to death. "John Rainey has no remorse; John Rainey still believes he can kill and get away with it; John Rainey is a danger to society, in prison or out," Fyke said. "He seems to have no regard for human life. " Rainey was convicted last month of murdering the Belleville teen on the night of March 15, 1996. Fyke was on vacation in Florida, speaking to his mother from a beach side pay phone when he was surrounded by several young men. They forced Fyke to abruptly hang up the phone and demanded his wallet. When Fyke took too long to comply, Rainey put a. 38-caliber pistol to his head and pulled the trigger. Fyke had just $17 US on him. "I never got a chance to say good bye to him," Christine Fyke said last month in a victim impact statement. "If I could have warned him, I would have. " District attorney Noah McKinnon told jurors Fyke's death had devastated his family and sent his entire community into mourning. "(Rainey) took a large part of her life," McKinnon said, pointing to Fyke's mother. "You heard how his death took a chunk out of the heart of his father. An entire city in Canada mourned his loss. " 1 juror was so moved by Christine Fyke's statement he walked over to Fyke's best friend Che Guerrera, who was beside the Belleville teen when he died, and apologized on behalf of the American people. "Tell all of Canada we apologize," Raoul Alfonso said. HOUSE OF COMMONS Monday, March 18, 1996 MARK FYKE Mr. Ed Harper (Simcoe Centre, Ref. ): Mr. Speaker, over this past weekend Canadians were shocked and saddened at the tragic death of Mark Fyke, an 18-year-old student from Belleville, Hastings, Ontario, Canada. It now appears with the arrest of a suspect that both the victim and his killer are the same age. This terrible shooting is a reminder to all Canadians that violence among our young is not restricted to Canada and it is our youth who are most often the victims of these violent teenagers. Mark, with a full and promising future ahead of him, has been denied that future by the senseless actions of the accused. His family have been denied the love and affection of a son in the prime of his life. Mark's many school friends share the deep loss and hurt that his family are experiencing. I am sure I speak for all members of the House when I say to Mark's mother and father as well as sister Jennifer and brother Paul that our hearts and thoughts are with you as you come to terms with this tragic loss of a loved one. MARK FYKE Mr. Lyle Vanclief (Prince Edward-Hastings, Lib. ): Mr. Speaker, I also rise today to extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Mark Fyke, an 18-year-old constituent of mine from the city of Belleville who was murdered while on March break in Florida. The loss of this energetic, bright and respected young man is a brutal and senseless tragedy that has shaken our community and indeed the nation. I cannot express clearly enough our hope that the murder of this young man will at the very least result in a greater awareness in the state of Florida of the need to act to stem the tide of violent crime that has swept over this tourist region and taken so many innocent lives. This death need not have occurred and it is more than reason enough to ensure that measures are taken to prevent other meaningless murders in the future. On behalf of the members of the House of Commons and all Canadians I extend our sympathy to Mark's family. I know we all share his family's shock and grief and we will remember them in our prayers. http://www. hpedsb. on. ca/harm/dir1/harmony_kindness. html
